My dh got into an argument last evening about vegetarianism and nutritional

supplements. He doesnt believe you can be a vegetatian without taking

supplements (and for that reason will not go even one meal without meat.) My

question to you all, how many of you are vegan and do not take supplements and

how is your health (if I'm not prying)? I know it is possible to be a vegan and

not be a vitamin popper, but I dont know where to begin looking to find the

resources I need to make healthy meal choices for my family, or even how to

build a meal that is balanced without having to add meat to it. THanky you for

you time

The only supplement that most vegans need is B12, but it's essential.

Then again, most meat eaters over the age of 50 should be taking B12

supplements, too, because they're likely to have deficiencies due to

problems absorbing it. All it takes is a tiny chewable tablet a

couple of times a week--much less expensive than meat (especially when

you consider the cost of cancer and/or heart disease treatments down

the road).

I just realized I didn't really answer your question. My whole family

eats a vegan diet, and we take the previously mentioned B12 tablet.

We're all very healthy (my husband gets great reviews from his doctor

every time he comes in for his yearly checkup), and my daughter is

growing at the same rate as other children her age but gets sick about

1/4 as much as they do (colds and such don't seem to " stick " to her).

Menu planning is very easy. As long as you're eating a varied diet of

beans, grains, vegetables, fruits, and a few nuts and seeds, you'll

get what you need. You can find nutrition info and menus at

http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/index.htm, but basically, if you're

eating plain, unrefined food (not junk food or packaged foods) and

getting enough calories to sustain you, all of the nutritional bases

should be covered. Start with a main dish containing beans or tofu,

include a small side dish of starchy vegetables or whole grain (brown

rice, for example), and fill the rest of your plate with fresh

vegetables. Or do like I often do and make a soup containing all of

this for a one-dish meal!

You'll probably get a lot of answers to your question, but remember

that this is a recipe list and our primary goal is to share recipes.

So if there's anything you want to know how to cook, don't be afraid

to ask.

My 7 year old and myself are completely vegan and have been for the past 8 months. I was pregnant at the time I made the switch (my baby is now 7 months old) and both girls have just had their annual and 6 months checkup respectively. I told the girls' doctor about this change in diet and she expressed concern over them becoming anemic so she did a simple prick of my 7 year olds finger and ran a test. her number was well within range. :) That coupled with the fact we never get sick, we aren't overweight and I'm diligent with ensuring we eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains everyday.

for myself I make a JP complete shake with a tablespoon of brewer's yeast, freshly ground flax seeds, teaspoon of non-irradiated cinnamon, banana and frozen berries everyday. For my daughter I sprinkle nutritional yeast on spaghetti or bread or cooked veggies everyday to make sure she's getting the b-12. For my 7 month old, she's exclusively breast fed so I'm not worried about her either.

I also have my family on Juice Plus. it's fruits and vegetables in a capsule form so on the days when I'm just not getting the variety then I know I'm getting them from Juice Plus. the research is there and the proof with all of us being illness free is enough for me to feel we are meeting and often exceeding our nutritional goals. :)

Hope this helps!

Whole Foods, and even WinCo if you have one - they carry it in the bulk sections.....On Mar 26, 2009, at 6:36 AM, Christina Watt wrote:Where do I find nutritional yeast?Christina"As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. I'm sorry but I'm not well versed on what the health benefits are of the brewers

yeast and non-irradiated cinnamon. I don't even know what that type of cinnamon

is! Could you please enlighten me?

Thanks,

Alicia :)

No one near me sells it so I buy it in bulk from The Mail Order Catalog

at http://www.healthy-eating.com . Other people buy it from other bulk

on-line sources, too.

If you *do* find it locally, first make sure it's *nutritional* yeast

and not brewer's yeast - not the same thing at all. Also, if you buy it

pre-packaged in a jar be sure to read the label, as a few companies add

whey, a milk product, to it.

Brewer's Yeast - Brewer's Yeast is best when bought in bulk because it is less oxidized and processed. Brewer’s Yeast is the very best natural source of the B Vitamins on the planet. Whether we are experiencing a busy day- stressful or otherwise, our bodies burn off the B vitamins quickly so it is important to replenish the supply. You will notice that if drinking the shake daily and practicing dietary excellence, you will have a much higher level of energy than ever before. Your endurance during a workout will increase. Your overall emotional level will remain more balanced and you will see a decrease in the highs and lows. Your ability to absorb and retain information will be far greater

as well.

Always buy herbs and spices that say “non-irradiated.†Almost all spices on the market, unless specifically stated as “non-irradiated†have undergone a process of ionized radiation in order to increase shelf life and kill any possible bacteria existing on the herb or spice. While this may sound good at first glance, most of the valuable, even medicinal, qualities are purged. This leaves the consumer with a degenerated food product, and may even contain carcinogenic chemicals as a by product.

Here are some of the health benefits of cinnamon as found by a large number of research studies from around the world:

can boost brain functions, performance and memory

can help lower LDL cholesterol

helps regulate blood sugar (makes it especially beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes

in some studies, it's been shown to stop medication resistant yeast infections

in a study published by researchers at the USDA in Maryland, it reduced the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cancer cells

has an anti clotting effect on blood

arthritis relief

fights e.coli in unpasteurized juices and foods

excellent source of managanese, fiber, iron, calcium and other minerals
