Has anyone had any experience with this or knowledge about it?

They had bottles of it at Whole Foods last week and I bought a couple. I liked

that it had probiotics and the B vitamins including B-12. The problem I have is

its not cheap and its 60 calories a bottle. I don't like to drink my calories.

There are quite a few claims on the bottle (sounds like a miracle drink!) and I

wondered if anyone else drinks it. Thanks in advance!

My husband is a microbiologist, and loves to study and work with little bugs.  So Kombucha intrigued him and we made some at home, using a recipe from Nourishing Traditions.  It molded over.  But I know it has many fans, who claim a wide range of medicinal effects.  For me personally, it helped with intestinal problems after drinking alcohol which fortunately I have given up for some time now.  But it also helped my skin (I have eczema) and so I bought a case of what you had from the store.  I find it refreshing and delicious.  That reminds me to get some since my eczema is back with a vengeance.  We had better luck (and it even tastes better) making the Beet Kvass recipe (also in Nourishing Traditions) - MAN IS THAT GOOD.  But it has some salt in there, and if you are not using salt of course you would not want to try it.  We would make up a few batches and it would be gone in three days - it's that good.  Good luck with Kombucha, better yet, Kvass!JTOn Apr 14, 2009, at 9:35 AM, smith_sharonl wrote:Has anyone had any experience with this or knowledge about it?They had bottles of it at Whole Foods last week and I bought a couple. I would not really worry about the colories as much as the benefits the mushromm has.

The benefits are far to numerous to list here but go on-line and look up what the mushroom can do for the average person. It is incredible.

The cheapest way to do this is to grow the mushroom at home.

Again go on-line and see were you can buy the "mother" mushroom and follow the instructions very carefully.

The reason it is high in calories is all Komucha mushrooms are cultivated with brown sugar but again don't make that your main focus look at all it's health benefits. It is well worth growing it yourself--- On Tue, 4/14/09, smith_sharonl <smith_sharonl wrote:

I don't know a lot about Kombucha, but have heard about it over a few years.

(I've also bought the bottled stuff at Whole Foods, just a couple times. )

I would suggest that you look into growing your own (I think someone else

mentioned this already?)

Also, you can easily learn to make rejuvelac, which is a probiotic drink made

from sprouted grain and water. (I make it pretty often lately. I use it in my

green smoothies......)

I recently went to a class about fermented foods. Really fun stuff.

I now make sauerkraut and kefir. If you are interested,

I really really really recommend the book " Wild Fermentation "

http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQcpidZ1158043706QQprZ2475946

One of the best books ever. I think it includes Kombucha, and I'm sure

it has rejuvelac and many many many other probiotic foods / drinks.

However, probiotic is not necessarily the same as Kombucha -- it may

have some other properties in addition to probiotic. Mushrooms

generally have a lot of specialness -- e.g. some are very good for the

immune system etc.

best,

Moria

-I used to make kombucha and it was very good for the digestion. We were moving

acouple of times ayear though and it didn't seem to take well to that so I gave

the mother to a friend and then just didn't bother. I like buying the kombucha

from wholefoods but the cost si too jhigh as is the kimchee there

I have also made the beet kvass but it was too salty-can it be made with less

salt I wonder

I have been planning on making my own sauerkraut for years now but keep using

the excuse that I need the glass jars that the bubbies kind comes in for storing

my stock etc that I do make-frankly I am afraid that I will make a bad batch and

make everyone sick-

I think I will try a small batch of kimchee or gingered pickled carrots first.

Oh yes!  Kimchee is so easy and good.  I forget which recipe we used, but we made it in five gallon buckets with lots of ginger and green onion and chiles, and it just added that perfect touch to everything.  We ended up selling it to people we worked with for $6 a jar, and they were happy to get it.  I'll poke around for the recipe - if I can make it, anyone can.  JTOn Apr 15, 2009, at 8:33 PM, emusedmary wrote:-I used to make kombucha and it was very good for the digestion.
