Guest guest
Hi all, I have a few foods to cheer about, so I thought I'd share my excitement: 1. Trader Joe's has a new product -- it is canned tomato sauce with diced and fire roasted green chiles and NO sugar and NO added oil. I saw it on a shelf for " new products " . The label says " Organic Tomatoes, Trader Joe's, Diced & Fire Roasted, with organic green chilies " Ingredients: Organic fire roasted tomatoes, organic tomato juice, organic green chile peppers, sea salt, citric acid, organic vinegar, calcium chloride. Okay, so it doesn't pass for " no salt " . 2. Chipote (a chain restaurant, but I don't know how big an area they cover) -- they sell " fresh Mexican " type food (including organic beef for those who eat such things). Anyway, they sell a " burrito salad bowl " or -- um -- something like that. Basically you can get a " normal " burrito, with a tortilla around it -- or you can get it without the tortilla and with lettuce instead. It's good lettuce too. Very yummy -- comes with beans and guacamole (obviously high fat, and they will give you a HUGE amt of it unless you tell them not to) -- tomatoes, onions, salsa, etc. I got extra salsa and some corn salsa on mine. For restaurant food this is darned close to perfect. It is also all fresh food, and filling. (Note: they also sell another variation with rice instead of lettuce. The rice is white rice, and has oil added to it.) There's also another Mexican restaurant (I forget their name though) that has a bed of lettuce as a menu option for a burrito. I hope it becomes a trend! When they offer what I want this way, it means there are fewer modifications that I have to ask for. 3. Another Trader Joe's product: Cajun Style Black Beans. I just tried this for the first time. Ingredients: prepared black beans, water, green bell peppers, onions, garlic puree (garlic, water, citric acid), sea salt, spices, red wine vinegar. (This also fails on added salt.) 4. TJ's also has a refried beans without added oil. best, Moria
Guest guest
My office is located in a mall and directly beneath us is a Chipotle restaurant -- it's pretty much my go-to place when haven't brought dinner to work. I order a veggie salad and have them load up on rice, black beans, fajita grilled veggies (sometimes, I don't think they're fat free), pico de gallo, corn salsa, and a drizzle of the hot sauce. I usually skip the guacamole except rarely, when I ask for just a tiny amount. The various liquids from the beans and salsas sort of combine to make the " dressing. " It's just about perfect; it would be if the rice were brown and the beans didn't have any salt added to them. The only trouble with working above a Chipotle is when they grill the veggies we can smell it in the office, which instantly makes me want some, whether I was hungry before or not. It's a good thing we're at the other end of the mall from the curry place; I don't think I could work there. Yum (but not remotely low fat). Interestingly, just across the street there is another Mexican grill (Pancheros) that serves the exact same stuff as Chipotle (they were here in this town first). I'd go there more often, but Chipotle serves their salad in a paper bowl, the other place uses plastic. On the other hand, Pancheros is locally owned. Hmm. I may have to rethink my position on that. Guest guest
Send Pancheros a copy of your letter here; maybe they will switch to paper!JTOn Apr 14, 2009, at 10:15 AM, Debbie wrote:My office is located in a mall and directly beneath us is a Chipotle restaurant -- it's pretty much my go-to place when haven't brought dinner to work. Guest guest
Chipotle uses soybean oil in just about everything including the guacamole btw. Its still my " go to " for fast food as they are in most cities and sometimes I need something quick and reliably vegan when I am traveling to places that dont have a Whole Foods or vegan friendly restaurants. Guest guest
Good idea, I'll do that! In the meantime, I'm thinking I could just take my own container, which would be even better! Guest guest
I'm going to try not to eat out for the few weeks and concentrate on losing weight. But I know eating out is such a big part of my world. Anyone have hints on eating out and eating far free vegan? There are no vegan recipes in my area. How do I choose? Thanks, Peg
Guest guest
Hey that's an even BETTER idea! I saw someone taking their own cup into my AA meeting instead of using the styrofoam. I'm going to do that from now on too! I ALWAYS use bags at the groceries - we have ones that say "I Used to Be a Plastic Bag" on them. Guest guest
Moira, So Chipote food is vegan? I had figured they used beef broth. What a great thing to find out. My friends (non vegans all) love Chipote food. This is wonderful! Judy On Behalf Of Moria Merriweather 2. Guest guest
Peg, Do you have a Jason's Deli in your area? Their salad bar is excellent. They have several fat-free dressings. However, I usually just add some balsamic vinegar to my salad. They have a jar of it on the salad bar. They always have a vegetable soup, although it may have a bit of oil in it. I've never checked into it because if I get a side, it's usually a baked potato, without butter. That is the best restaurant I've found to actually eat totally fat free vegan, without having to order special, except to hold butter if I have the baked potato. We enjoy our fat free foods at home so much that we don't eat out much any more though. Guest guest
Hi Judy, Sorry if I gave you the wrong impression -- I don't know what is vegan or not. But I did eat there tonight and asked if the black beans have oil added. She said no, but the pintos have lard (I think she said " bacon " -- same difference). Chipote only serves a few things -- so it is a short list to check out. I'm happy with black beans and lettuce and salsa fresca and guac..... I haven't asked about the ingredients in all these, but I'm like that. (What I was excited about is that they have a burrito with lettuce instead of tortilla. Also, their food is always good / fresh.) By the way, Vegetarian Resource Group has a guide to fast food. I don't know how often they update it, but I should probably get a new one! The beans at Taco Bell are animal free but have oil added. Moria At 03:39 PM 4/14/2009, you wrote: >So Chipote food is vegan? I had figured they used beef broth. What a great >thing to find out. Guest guest
Hi, Martha, we don't have a Joe's Deli in my area, but after I read your post I found a locally owned deli that is willing to make vegan meals for me. Thanks for the tip!
