Guest guest
I know that gelatin is a no-no, but had heard that kosher gelatin was okay (vegan) But then yesterday, I picked up a package of kosher marshmallows which listed the gelatin as kosher fish gelatin. Obviously this is not " legal, " and I quickly put it back down, Now I'm thoroughly confused. Is this kosher fish gelatin something different than kosher gelatin or is all gelatin verboten, whether or not it is kosher? Guest guest
All gelatin is not vegetarian. Usually gelatin is made from pig's hooves, rendering it not kosher. Kosher gelatin is made from fish. The labeling is to spell out specifically to those not in the know that the kosher gelatin contains fish. Vegan " gelatin " , or its equivalent, would be agar agar.On Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 9:21 AM, <pkinnetz wrote: I know that gelatin is a no-no, but had heard that kosher gelatin was okay (vegan) But then yesterday, I picked up a package of kosher marshmallows which listed the gelatin as kosher fish gelatin. Guest guest
You can make great gelled things with agar-agar (Kanten). Agar is made fromseaweed, by the way. Go to the Macrobiotic folks - that's where we learned how to use it. You can make all sorts of good things, including gelled fruit juices as a base for anything you wish to add, or one of our favorites: blueberry, apricot, or other fruit Kanten, and some savory dishes too. Any goodMacrobiotic chef (or cookbook) will teach you all about it. Martha WilliamsOn Sat, Apr 18, 2009 at 9:31 AM, Blue Rose <bluerose156 wrote: All gelatin is not vegetarian. Guest guest
All kosher means is that is not from an unclean animal and that it was blessed by a priest. agar agar or guar gum or something like that is what you need to be looking for. Guest guest
Dandies Air-Puffed Vegan Marshmallows by Chicago Soydairy Notify Me Upon Availability $5.29 Sold Out View Enlarged Image **NOTE REGARDING OUR SUPPLY OF DANDIES** - Our stock will be a bit sporadic while Chicago Soydairy is perfecting their production and obtaining new machinery, so we may have shortages for a few days here and there between our shipments as we expect them to sell extremely quickly as they arrive in. If you see Dandies as being out of stock, don’t worry, as we should have new batches arriving in each week as they’re ready. Our first shipment that arrived was very small, but we’re expecting a few hundred more bags next week, so if you miss out on this initial offering, be sure to check back a few days later as more will be on the way! Dandies are an air puffed campfire style vegan marshmallow, completely free of animal-based gelatin and other nasty ingredients. These light and fluffy Dandies melt just like regular non-vegan marshmallows and are made on dedicated vegan equipment, so they’re absolutely free from any animal products. Dandies are great in any application you would normally use a marshmallow for - S'mores, hot cocoa or just popping one your mouth as a snack. They make crisped rice treats just like the real ones, so you can have a batch of those tasty snacks any time you get the urge to bake up a batch. Heck, they even catch fire just like traditional non-vegan marshmallows, so they’re great for roasting, too! Dandies really are that delicious, so if you miss the flavor and texture of classic non-vegan marshmallows, they’ll give you just what you’re after. 10 oz. bag is $5.29. (Bowl not included) Ingredients: Corn syrup, vegan beet sugar, corn starch, corn dextrose, water, carrageenan, soy protein, natural vanilla flavor I found these marshmallows on line. They look promising. Sheila B
