Guest guest
Ok this is going to be random but I just wanted to let you know that if you go to the store and look down the healthy asile. Look at how much total fat each of them have times it by 9 (that puts in calories) divide that number by the total calories it has. it will probably give you a number in decimal form. if that number is less than .30 (or 30 % it is healthy and good for you). You are not suppose to have more than 30 % a day. Some healthy foods are not so healthy for you. If the explaining up there was confusing for you, here it is in number form. I am going to use a Quaker Chewy bar since it is what I have with me. It's Low fat Oatmeal Raisin with 90 calories. it has 1.5 grams of fat. so i would do 1.5 x 9 which gives me 13.50. I divide 13.50 by 90 which is .15 or 15 %. Nature's Own is 31% percent but is down the Healthy asile. Guest guest
The fat in calories is listed on the labels it is much easier to look at that and divide the fat calories by the total calories. FOr instance if something has 100 calories and 30 fat calories it is 30% fat. Jeff Novik has a great talk on this and explains i very well and simply. My favorite snack is to take popcorn I pop in my air popper and spray on some braggs and sprinkle it with nut. yeast.

Guest guest
Martha, I totally agree - those baby carrots that sometimes are really baby carrots and sometimes are just shaved down, well those are very delicious after a few days of chomping. You get used to them and pretty soon they are addictive - fun to eat and good for you too.A good reminder to myself!Well all, I'm off to California for a few days to visit my Aunt. I'll be back Monday to see what you-all have written! Can't wait!JennOn Apr 21, 2009, at 5:53 PM, Martha wrote:My two cents--emphasize veggies.Martha Melanie <gradteacherwriter >To: Sent: Tuesday, April 21, 2009 11:55:19 AMSubject: healthy snacksHi everyone!Looking for some healthy snacks. If you're serious about losing weight, here's a suggestion: If you avoid refined foods (crackers, etc.) altogether, and systematically reduce your fat calories to no more than 10% of your total calories per day, you can eat pretty much what you want, and you will still lose weight. At least that is what has happened for me and several friends who have been doing this for a while now. For example, on an 1800 cal./day diet, you would be eating no more than 180 cals. of fat. This means checking both the total calories AND the fat calories of anything you eat, to make sure that fat calories do not comprise more than 10% of total calories. If the foods you listed here are representative, then right now you are eating way more fat than your body needs. For example: raw almonds are 160 calories per 1/4 cup serving, of which 120 calories are fat -- which is 75% fat (!) Hummus, made the traditional way (with sesame tahini), has around 435 calories per cup, of which 190 calories are fat -- which is 44% fat. Eating this much fat makes it really hard to lose weight. If you stick to whole foods, and avoid or minimize those that are high in fat (mainly nuts and avocados), weight loss will follow. This usually means snacking on fruits and veggies, baked sweet potatoes (my personal all-time favorite snack), etc. rather than refined foods. Also, just FYI, you can make delicious hummus without tahini - just put chickpeas in your food processor with enough water to blend til smooth, then add your favorite seasonings, plus lemon juice and a clove or so of garlic, plus any fresh herbs you like - I love adding fresh dill or fresh cilantro - and blend again til amooth. Hope this helps! -MEC
Guest guest
Hey Melanie, I love your question because I love my snacks! Oddly, however, I seem to forget some of my favorites, then I cycle through them again as I buy different produce. In addition to lunch and dinner, I always bring a basket of snacks with me to work. I sort of identify with it -- If I in to work without a basket of fresh produce in my hand, it would stand out. Favorites recently: -- strawberries -- grapes (green or purple) -- sweet peppers (there are a couple different kinds I buy -- either the tiny ones at Costco that are yellow/orange/red and LOOK LIKE hot peppers but are not -- or red bell peppers cut into strips). -- green beans (raw) -- pita bread crackers (whole wheat pita bread, cut into strips and dried in the oven. I get the pita bread @ Trader Joe's. It is 10% of calories from fat, but it DOES contain oil. Also I'm not sure that bread is legal on E2l.) Later there will be all the summer fruit (peaches, apricots), and blueberries, and fresh peas (in pods). Also microwaved popcorn (nothing on it). best, Moria At 06:41 AM 4/22/2009, you wrote: >healthy snacks > Posted by: " Melanie " gradteacherwriter gradteacherwriter > Tue Apr 21, 2009 10:09 am ((PDT)) > >Hi everyone! > >Looking for some healthy snacks.
