going vegan certainly doesn't have to cost an arm and leg..veggies and stuff is CHEAP!

its all the analogs and stuff that gets all pricey....

vegetarian 14 yrs...vegan about 8.....

something like that....

Hi I went vegetarian 15 yrs ago and veganisn 8 yrs ago..I haven't noticed it

costing any more....but that wasn't my reason for going veggie...good luck

with your choice.

It has to be the best choice a person can make in their lives!

Hi Sam

That's pretty much what happened to me too

Once I found out everything in the animal products as well as how the

animals were treated, I just couldn;t do it any longer

It took me about a week and a half to convert because of lack of

supplies in the house and the non-vegans that dwell here as well, but

I never looked back

And I so enjoy the things I eat now, I can never see myself missing

any of it!

Tho I do wish earlier on I had been more concious of things and was

veggie fer awhile

Congrats on yer decision!

Nikki :)

Sam - that's a brave move I reckon. It's difficult enough when you first turn veggie, and then difficult again when you turn vegan. To do it one move is really good.

It was my mother-in-laws invention. She passed away a few years ago, but I

imagine that she has it written out on a recipe card in her files. Next

time I'm at my FIL's, I will try to remember to look through the recipe

files.

Remind me again. . .just in case I forget.

i would start the children off with juicing and making

raw desserts and raw salads first. Then slowly add in

the raw meals.

You have made a very wise decision.  After a while, you won't miss " meat " ...

Do a search on diabetic vegetarians...for what to eat.  Good for you!

Warm welcome to the group, Liz.

Thank you for taking the time to post an

intro. It is great you are getting into eating

healthy. College is a difficult time for many

people to stay healthy. The parties, the stress

eating, the lack of funds for good food! Ugh!

It is a challenge and we will be her to help

in any way we can.

Our recipe files are a great resource so dig in

there. You have any other questions along the

way just ask. :)

know where to start as far as preparing the rice balls and whatnot, but I hope

to learn that in time.

Thanks for the warm words! Everyone is so nice here. I was kind of embarrased by

my posting for a while because my first name shows up but I use my middle name

most of the time so that is how I introduce myself. It makes me look like a

total liar! Urg.

Anyway, I think that becoming a vegetarian has probably been easier due to the

fact that I moved out of the dorms 2 years ago and so I am not forced to deal

with cafeteria food. It is so much easier since I cook all my food myself.

Parties are disasters as far as trying to be healthy is concerned, but I have

found that as I am getting closer to graduation I don't really indulge in them

much anymore. I think that I am at the point now that I am ready to be done and

although some of my more Dioynysian years were fun, I don't want to be

distracted anymore. I will drink a glass of wine or a beer with my dinner

sometimes, but that is about it.

Lack of funds is my main problem now! My mom is actually going to send me some

food staples in one of those flat-rate shipping boxes for my birthday this

month. I'm really excited about that! I am rather pleased that she is being so

supportive of me in this choice and others. I didn't really think that she would

be since she loves her meats, but she seems to understand where I am coming from

and is even going to look at labels on my behalf. I am hoping that maybe I can

see her sometime soon and make her a proper vegetarian meal.

Hi there. I just wanted to take the time to introduce myself to the group.

My name is Melanie, and due to my husband having some major heart problems in

the last few months I am looking at going to a vegetarian type diet. I am sure

there are things I will use to cook with or mention in the beginning that are

not supposed to be used.

Please forgive me, as I am just learning right now. I noticed it said no

margarine, oils, etc. So that will take some time for me to change, as this is

what I have always used to cook with.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You Melanie & Mike

Welcome, Melanie and Mike. You're in the right place and you will find that to go strictly fat-free vegan will do wonders for your husband's heart problems. My husband turned around his heart problems in a matter of months by a very strict fat-free vegan diet. It takes some getting used to, but he's maintained it now for three years with phenomenal results. I'd suggest buying, reading, and following the recommendations of Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., M.D.'s Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. It's our bible and the recipes are great.

I would also suggest checking out Susan V.'s recipes at www.fatfreevegan.com. They're great, too!

Good luck. We're here for you!

Hey melanie! I don't contribute much to the chat room, but I certainly listen. The advice and debates are worth remembering. Additionally, I use people's tips when I have company or need to provide for a pot luck. Thank you for the suggestions! I do appreciate all of what you will all have to offer, more than you know. I am just happy to still have my wonderful and loving hubby around, and hope to for several more years. I know all of these terms will be knew to me at first, especially the phrase fat-free vegan. But I am wanting to learn for the sake of my family and our health. Thank You for the warm welcome Mary!

Melanie, Fat-free means no added fat like margarine, butter, oils, etc. Vegan means nothing with a face or a mother, however you want to think of it. This means no chicken, fish, as well as no beef, pork, lamb, etc. It also means nothing from a living thing such as eggs or dairy (milk, cheese) etc. Don't worry about asking what might seem like a silly question. There are no silly questions and we were all newcomers at one time or another (unless of course we were born into vegan families which isn't usually the case.) I know it is terrifying to be diagnosed with serious heart disease, but it does not have to be a death sentence. It can be turned around and he can live a long and healthy life. Remember you've had a lifetime learning to cook a certain way so at first, all this new stuff can seem difficult. You'll get used to it, have fun, do something good for the planet and yourselves, not to mention the animals we used to eat, AND you'll feel great!

I found the more I read, the easier it got. Diet for a New America by John Robbins is a classic as far as the whys of this kind of "diet." But there are lots and lots of good books and cookbooks and I'm sure many people on this list can give you suggestions of their favorites.

We can all be proud of ourselves for how we eat!

Any type of veg diet you want COULD be called veg, but this is for fat-free vegans (no added oils). This may be a good place to begin. On Sun, Oct 25, 2009 at 5:15 PM, Melanie <melanie65560 wrote:
