Karen,

Please do tell about Tofutti cream cheese. I buy it and think it's really good

(gives us *something* to put on our bagels) but I do know that it has partially

hydrogenated soybean oil in it.

Terry

(I've been in a protracted battle

with them to carry Tofutti " cream cheese, " but that's

another story)

Hi, Terry--

Actually, Tofutti has reformulated its Better Than

Cream Cheese. It no longer contains hydrogenated oils

(yay!). The packaging is new, too--there's a yellow

collor on the tub. If you are purchasing cream cheese

with hydrogenated oil or in an all-white tub, then I

suspect you have an old batch!

I don't have a tub in my fridge currently, so I can't

give you an entire ingredient list. And, oddly, the

Tofutti website still has the old ingredients listed.

But I can assure you, at least here in Northern

California, the reformulation is available, and is

free of hydrogenated oils...

Regarding my co-op, they used to not carry the old

version because of the hydrogenated oils. Now they are

resisting the new version because they cannot verify

that the vegetable mono and diglycerides are of

totally natural origin. <sigh> I personally think it's

a plot against vegans, since the co-op recently

started carrying cow and pig meats for the first time

in its 35-plus year history!

Tofutti seems to have recently changed their recipe for Better Than Cream

Cheese. My grocery now carries the new version without hydrogenated oils.

It's still called Better Than Cream Cheese, but the package is somewhat

different and it explicitly says something like " no transfats " or " no

hydrogenated oils " on the package.

FYI, the new Better than Cream Cheese was discontinued at my Wild Oats store

because it contains preservatives. I tried it and liked it so much, I asked

about it when I didn't see it on the shelves for a while. The dairy manager at

Wild Oats also told me that they opened a lot of the Better than Cream Cheese

product that they had (before it was discontinued) after a customer returned one

with mold in it. Everyone that they opened also contained mold. They threw the

rest out.

The Better Than Cream Cheese at our store is almost always bad, too.

Usually it's been frozen, so it has a curdled texture and tastes like soap.

I'm told the store doesn't stock the shelves, the vendor does. So with

these two stories combined it sounds like the company doesn't have any

quality control nor does it train it's distributors on how to store their

products.

The Whole Foods in our area won't even carry it because it " doesn't meet our

standards " .

Where are you located at? We are in Portland, Oregon. My husband

works at Wild Oats, and the story that we are getting is the

hydrogenated oil one. I haven't heard about Wild Oats discontinuing

Tofutti due to no preservatives. I'd like to find out about it a

little more and get the " true " story!

Thanks,

Marisa

This was at the Wild Oats on Hillsboro Rd in Nashville, TN. I'm pretty sure it

was the dairy manager that told me this. I don't know his name. Let me know

what you find out. Thanks - Christine

Here in Portland, Wild Oats discontinued all Tofutti products because

of the hydrogenated oils. They haven't carried the non-preserved

stuff. Wild Oats has bought up a lot of the smaller natural foods

chains, which leads to differences in policies across sotres. Here

they used to be Natures. Maybe this is the discrepency between our

two experiences! I just really miss Tofutti and have resorted to

bying the stuff at my local Kroger chain. Blahhhhhhhh!!!!!!

Two things I feel like pointing out about tofutti:1) Although vegan, it is not fat free (that doesn't mean I don't eat it from time to time myself) so it probably shouldn't be confused as a health food2) if you buy tofutti keep your eyes peeled for the non-hydrogenated version (in a yellow container). Most of the flavored varieties are made with hydrogenated oils.By the way, Follow Your Heart's cream cheeZe is also pretty good.If you are stuck in the northeast in all the snow, stay safe!-ErinSent from my iPhoneOn Feb 8, 2010, at 11:09 AM, Katts Smith <kattssmith wrote:

I assumed the original poster was referring to the commercially prepared tofu-based cream cheese-like product made by Tofutti, not plain tofu. It's okay, especially when used with other ingredients with distinctive flavors (like celery and hot sauce). The taste is inoffensive; it's not as creamy and smooth like real dairy cream cheese it, but the overall experience is close. Really the only way to know if you like it is to give it a try.

Tofu is almost flavorless, so if you’re using it in a recipe, there

I see you have used tofu cream cheese. How does it

taste compared to real cream cheese? I have wanted to try it put was

afraid it would be bad tasting.

Thanks for your input.
