Crock pot beans

Hi, I finally just got a crock pot, I never had one before so I don't know

anything about it. I was wondering if anyone had a bean recipe, like a bean and

veggie or something like that where I could just add dry beans into it without

having to cook them first. Or, am I going to have to cook them first before I

put them in a recipe? I was just hoping to save time. Thanks for any help!

I made this recipe a couple of weeks ago and really liked it:

Slow Cooker Bunch of Beans Soup*

Many people will tell you that precooking the beans is beneficial to minimize the starches that can cause flatulence (that is, draining and/or rinsing the cooked beans will help get rid of some of the troublesome starches). You may or may not have this problem.

Also, you may find that if your recipe includes tomato products or other acidic foods, or salt or salty foods, that your beans might not cook fully.  You can usually get around this problem by leaving the acidic/salty foods out until the beans are cooked and then adding them at the end.

One way to save time is by precooking the beans in larger amounts and then freezing them in quantities that you are likely to use (1-1/2 cups is more or less equivalent to a can of beans, so freezing them in 1-1/2 or 3 cup portions makes sense as lots of recipes refer to canned beans).  I don't even bother to thaw them out when adding them to the slowcooker.

Have fun with your slowcooker!

* also, check out the other recipes at the same site for more slow-cooker recipes -- they're not all fat free, but many of them are.

That soup looks delicious. Did you use the garlic Tabasco?

No, I didn't have any.  I used a smokey serrano pepper sauce instead, but I did put in a few more cloves of garlic. DebbieOn Sat, Feb 20, 2010 at 2:17 PM, Dena Jo <DenaJo2 wrote:

A great book is Robin Robertson's Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker. She

explains how to make beans and gives lots of recipes whose only modification

needed in most cases is to eliminate the oil. Generally she (and I) cook the

beans in the slow cooker first, then use them for a recipe.
