Guest guest
Just wondering if anyone has tried Pero or Cafix. If so, what do you think of it.
Guest guest
I haven't tried or heard of either. Guest guest
They are instant beverages made from barley and chicory. Used in place of coffee. They are caffeine free and only have 5 calories per teaspoon. I only brought this up because I saw a post mentioning concerns of drinking real coffee. For an avid coffee fan, I find them acceptable replacement. , Bluesgyrl2 <bluesgyrl2 wrote: > > I haven't tried or heard of either. Guest guest
They are grain based coffee subs. I think, though, that Roma was the name of the one we really thought was excellent. Never tried those two. Marilyn Bluesgyrl2 <bluesgyrl2 Thu, Feb 25, 2010 12:30 pm Re: Coffee Substitutes I haven't tried or heard of either. Guest guest
FWIW, my husband and I had the Roma at a B & B in Idaho. My coffee-addicted husband and coffee-loving me could NOT tell that it wasn't real coffee! The owner of the B & B actually ended up telling us that. Wow! Guest guest
Honestly I don't think I could drink a coffee substitute. I love coffee and drink a few cups a day. I would rather reduce my consumption then replace it with grain drinks. Funny that I can go without cheesecake, steaks, milk, eggs (basically anything from the "Vegan? but I could never give up X!" list) etc.... but coffee is a real problem for me! -Erin daffy_kitty5 <leta_mabel Sent: Thu, February 25, 2010 10:57:14 AM Coffee Substitutes Just wondering if anyone has tried Pero or Cafix. Guest guest
My sister has Pero and likes it, but we get Teeccino from our co-op and it's my FAVORITE! It's seriously so good. You have to use a french press with it though, it's not instant. You can get lots of different flavors and roast strengths too. There are two kinds that are labeled a coffee flavor that have flavor components of coffee, but all the rest are free from anything coffee. Here is the website for more info. They are a lot cheaper through a co-op! http://www.teeccino.com/

You can use a drip system with a filter too (such as a regular automatic drip coffee maker). For all of these coffee substitutes, they vary in taste (Teeccino's not bad as such things go) but it's really an individual taste kind of thing -- you really just have to try them to see which ones you like best. You can get used to them if you try. Sadly, they're really just not coffee. Debbie
Guest guest
If they ever come out with a Teechino you can use in a regular drip coffee pot, I'm going to try that one. Guest guest
You can use a regular drip coffee pot. That's the only way I ever had it (at the McDougall Program 10-day residential program -- in a Mr. Coffee, if I recall correctly). Worked fine. Guest guest
Huh. As I recalled from a few years ago, this wasn't possible. AGood to know if I ever run across it again! Thanks! Guest guest
> Just wondering if anyone has tried Pero or Cafix. If so, what do you think of it. I've gone off and on them over the years, but usually find myself right back at Folger's decaf crystals. But the last time I looked in the HFS to try, try again I found the Cafix *crystals* instead of the powdered, and it tasted (almost) like the decaf coffee! Good, because I really hated that powdered stuff. It just never dissolved properly. The crystals dissolve as fast as coffee ones do. Right now I'm working on using up the last of the Folgers decaf in the house so I'm mixing the Cafix and Folgers half and half in a jar and using it like that, but when the Folgers is gone I'll stick with the Cafix from now on. Let's see, the jar says 7oz (weight - the volume looks to be around a quart of crystals) and I paid $7.39 in the local HFS, which is cheaper than I see Amazon has it for (same size jar for $10.50) for a single jar. The also have it by the case, 12 jars for $79.93, but I wouldn't drink that much in a year! Sue in NJ

You have to use a french press with it Well, any drip type coffee pot, like Mr. Coffee, will do. I got a free sample of this stuff once and saw that, and since we don't even own a coffee pot in this house, just an electric teapot, I gave it away. I'm the only one who drinks non-coffee in the family, anyway. My husband would probably cease to function without his multiple cups of very strong coffee each day. He must put about an ounce of Folgers crystals in each mug of coffee he drinks! I once (accidentally, I swear!) used my decaf instead of the regular crystals and he could tell right away, as soon as he drank it, that it wasn't " real " coffee. When I mentioned we both switch to not just decaf but the non-coffee products he said he loves me so much that we're married over 30 years, but if I dared serve him that stuff he would kick me out of the house. Guest guest
Sue--My husband is exactly like yours, and I swear he could NOT tell that the Caffree Roma was not real coffee. He was shocked when the owner of our B & B told him. Not that I'm encouraging you to trick your dh just to make a point, but.....
