As Vegans, what is considered high protien foods?

Also, what are considered high iron foods?

I don't care for Tofu, at least how I make it.

Thank you!!

Legumes, beans lentils peas, usually have the most protein at something like 25%

of their calories from protein. Vegetarians find natural protein more diffuse

and less concentrated than omnivores or body builders who take refined protein

supplements. If I remember right, medical writers have blamed high protein diets

for causing the loss of calcium from the body. Legumes and greens are also a

source for iron.

All plants are *complete* proteins, meaning they have the full spectrum of

essential amino acids. The " incomplete protein " idea is a myth continually

reinforced by the omni media. If you have doubts, check the USDA database for

essential amino acid profiles and note that there are NO ZEROES. That said,

quinoa is high in protein for a grain, and beans are comparable to meat on a per

calorie basis, plus they have lots of fiber making them far superior to some

dead animal! Protein is a nonissue unless you eat mostly refined white flour and

sugar.

Sandy--I believe the website VegFamily has the lists of vegan sources of iron, protein, etc. somewhere. Or maybe it's Hallelujah Acres. In general, nuts, beans, and seeds are high protein, and green leafy veggies are high iron. Blackstrap molasses, raisins, and cream of wheat cereral are also high iron foods. As for tofu--throw a few small cubes in with a green smoothie, or when you make a creamy type of dip or dressing! You'll never know it's there. Marilyn

That is correct, as I know it. Too much protein leeches calcium from the bones. People eating a lot of meat and dairy are usually eating too much protein, setting themselves up for osteoporosis and similar problems (no, drinking more milk and eating yogurt won't help, despite what the commercials want us to believe). Check a reliable vegan source to see how much protein a healthy vegan really needs--I think it's something like 20-30 gms. per day (non-pregnant). Marilyn
