Guest guest
Every member has access to the email addresses of the other members on this list. They can send them to the members privately if they choose. They just can no longer use this list as their medium. Do online petitions really do any good? I have always wondered about their effectiveness. I never sign them but instead send snail mail handwritten letters to the appropriate persons if I feel a cause worthy. ~ P_T ~ The sparrow is sorry for the peacock at the burden of his tail. -Rabindranath Tagore, poet, philosopher, author, songwriter, painter, educator, composer, Nobel laureate (1861-1941) ~~~*~~~*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> , Sant & Brown <santbrown@l...> wrote: > But thanks to the person who did send the anti-war petition. I didn't think that sending the petition, would cause so much controversy or angry feelings. I didn't know that I could not, send any email like the before amentioned offense. I sent this email because I hoped the whole group would care about how our leaders are treating war like a game. I disagree with the war and hoped you all did 2. War causes anger and death. War tear's people apart. I hope that maybe someday we will have no more war's to fight. I don't like war because of the hardships it causes. I was wrong 4 sending that post and I appologize. I'm sorry 4 all the negativity my post caused.I didn't mean 2 offend anyone, and I appologise if I did so. If anyone feels that I should leave due 2 my actions, I will do so. Again I'm deeeply sorry 4 the negetivity my post caused the group. Sincerly sorry Angel

Hey Angel, I didn't hear anyone getting upset about the post you sent. All I saw was P_T trying to set up some guidelines for posting from now on. I don't like the idea of war of any sort either, but I also don't like online petitions, for a variety of reasons. So now that we all know what the guidelines are, I don't see that it's a problem for anyone. I certainly hope you don't leave because of it. -- Sherri " I'm all in favor of keeping dangerous weapons out of the hands of fools. Let's start with typewriters. Guest guest
angel, i think the only thing that made it irksome was that i sent out almost the exact same petition just a few days before you posted your version- so the group got it twice. anyways, karma is determined by intent; not outcome- i don't think you have anything to worry about pertaining to any ill effects or feelings by the group. just in case, though, i will take it upon myself to commit ritual seppukku (again...sigh) in order to beg the groups forgiveness of you. i shall write a final haiku, perform the tea ceremony one last time, and take away the burden of your guilt. regards, -Keith- Mail Plus - Powerful. Guest guest
iI's me again, Angel. I rather think there are more people who respect and appreciate your posting of the petition than you realize. It just happens, however, that the list owner has decided to ban the posting of actual petitions. I don't see that she has banned discussion of them, however, and unless we are told otherwise I don't see that it would violate any rules if you or anyone were to do either of two things: 1. post a weblink to a petitiion site. That takes up little room and serves as information which we can all access if we are interested. or 2. if no weblink is available, one could post a brief statement re the subject of a petition so that we could in turn contact the person posting it for the petition itself or more information. or of course there is a third option: 3. do as the listowner PT suggests and use personal emails of members, to which we all have access, and post to them individually or as a group off list. (I always thought this was generally considered improper, however, unless the individual members were already in touch with one off list - but perhaps I am being too scrupulous here.) Anyway, I signed the petition, sent it on, and I am getting feedback from several countries to say that it has been widely dispersed from those posts all of which came from your one post to this list. So cheer up. Even if, as PT says, online petitions do little actual good (and I question that ;=) but mildly) as far as where they are directed is concerned, they do serve to make people who receive and sign them aware and their friends/colleagues aware, and the more people who are trying to stop something bad happening - like this shocking war, for example - the better chance there is that there can be change somewhere sometime. Think of petitions as a secular form of prayer :=) best luck. peace. pat - canada

You didn't do anything wrong since it was not a rule as of yet. > If anyone feels that I should leave due 2 my actions, I will do so. > Again I'm deeeply sorry 4 the negetivity my post caused the group. > > Sincerly sorry > > Angel No need to be sorry or to leave. Nobody is angry or feeling negative that I know of. I just felt I should post that rule to keep our message digests less cluttered with online petitions. My thoughts on this have nothing at all to do with war or your petition specifically. Perhaps I should clarify the rule a bit. If you have a cause or political issue that you feel impotant and know of a petition you want to bring to our attention to sign, then just post the URL to the petition site. That way we don't get hundreds or thousands of " signatures " that we have to scroll through in our message digests or emails. Does that sound like a fair compromise? The scrolling format was the only thing I was trying to put an end to. NOT you freedom to express your feelings about the war or your cause. Have a nice day. ~ P_T ~ *listowner and peace lover*
