SWAP team have received this very heart rending appeal from Maureen at Animal House Jamaica rescue centre. please visit http://www.theanimalhousejamaica.org/home.html to see some of their wonderful work for the most appalling cases of animal abuse in Jamaica. Maureen is appealing for emergency donations to keep the shelter going. The shelter will struggle to save precious lives as funds are extremely low. Please read the email below and if you can help by making a donation no matter how small please email Maureen at animalhousejamaica Grateful thanks for your support SWAP team (working locally, nationally and internationally for all sentient beings) - animalhousejamaica southwestanimalprotection Tuesday, November 13, 2007 9:56 PM APPEAL Hi Helen Thank you for the nice e-mail. Sometimes moral support is even more important than financial support. We have not had internet access for the past couple of days so I could not answer you before this. I have been thinking a lot about how to appeal and have realized that because I try so hard to be positive all the time it is difficult for me to come across as desperate (which of course we are). I do believe that no matter what we will get through our periodic "crisis" moments and thus sometimes don't tell people just how difficult things are. We presently only have enough money to get through until next Wednesday. Since August, we have had a fairly steady supply of donations (not much but enough to manage) which has been wonderful, but it has been very slow for the past couple of weeks and we are very close to rock bottom. The good news is that we are also very close to some major help - we are one of the listed charities for an international golf tournament being held in January which will bring in a decent amount of money. But...we have to get through until then:) Our animals are brought in, or picked up, in deplorable condition. Jamaica is a very cold and cruel country for animals and we see some of the worst cases of abuse. Dogs with acid burns over 90% of the body, cats and dogs with gaping machete wounds, all kinds of animals with mange so bad that there is no hair left at all, horses abandoned and left to starve, and dogs hung from trees (several of which we have managed to cut down in time and save). We also frequently have to respond to calls about people putting their unwanted animals in sacks and throwing them into the sea with rocks tied to the bags. Not to mentionthe high number of animals that are not even taken to the sea - just tied in sacks and thrown out of carsinto the bush. It was never my intention to start an animal shelter. I am a writer/producer by profession (from Warwickshire) and only started helping the animals on the north coast of Jamaica because no one else was doing anything. I got tired of seeing dogs and cats lying on the roadside injured but still alive and being left to die in the hot sun. Had I known how difficult things would turn out to be I probably would have left the island in a cloud of dust, but I didn't know and here I - and the animals are:) I really have given everything I have to help these poor souls and have done - I think - a good job. Hundreds of lives have been saved and equal hundreds of good homes have been found. And so I soldier on. After all, we have survived four hurricanes in less than three years and I have faith that we will survive this temporary crisis. Finally, I do STRONGLY believe that there are people out there who will help. If you can, please do so. Everything donated goes to the animals. I take no salary. I so much appreciate your interest, Helen. Kind regards, Maureen Founded in the 1990's because of serious concerns about the plight of animals on the northcoast of Jamaica, THE ANIMAL HOUSE JAMAICA has been helping stray, injured, abandoned, and feral (wild) animals and their owners for more than six years. We provide food, shelter, medical care (including spay and neuter), and adoptive services to both animals and owners in need. is a non-profit, non-government organization that now operates a shelter in Lydford, St. Ann (just outside of Ocho Rios. The public is welcome (by appointment) to visit the many cats and dogs available for adoption to good homes. Please call for an appointment or if you wish to make a donation to help the animals JAMAICA LIMITED c/o P.O.Box 775 Ocho Rios, Jamaica WI (876)801-8386 (leave message) ANIMAL WELFARE IN JAMAICA People and families who have healthy relationships with their pets are usually happier, healthier and live longer. Children who learn how to nurture and care for their pets, also learn to care for other people as they grow older. Animals provide improved self-esteem and cognitive development. Animals cannot tell us in their language when they are happy or unhappy, hungry, hurt or sick. So it is up to we humans to understand their needs. Animals need to be treated with care and respect Unfortunately, many people do not understand what proper care of an animal really means, and many others cannot afford to care properly for their pets. Jamaican people commonly witness cruel treatment of animals, and over the generations some have even come to think that it is normal and okay. Research shows us that young people who mistreat animals are more likely to become violent as adults and violence hurts our society. Meanwhile, the animals suffer in silence. We see it daily - Animals trapped in cycles of neglect and abuse - chained - sick - starving -beaten -stoned - cursed -chopped and spirits broken. Uncared for - and unloved, fighting to stay alive. Many animals are not lucky enough to have a place to call home at all, and wander our streets and countryside, scavenging and preying on wildlife. In Jamaica, our biggest problems with animals are: Strays (dogs, cows, goats) Overbreeding (overpopulation) Medical Treatment costs for spay and neuter, injuries, tick flea and worm treatment, as well as preventable diseases like parvo which require immunization. Feral (wild) cats Neglect, Abuse, Abandonment (including racehorses) Humane Education The Animal House Jamaica needs your help to improve the conditions for animals in our communities. We operate the only animal shelter on the entire northcoast, and one of only two in Jamaica. Your donation makes the difference. The Animal House Jamaica picks up and accepts stray, injured, abandoned, neglected and abused animals providing food, shelter and medical care - then finds them permanent, safe and loving homes. c/o P.O.Box 775 Ocho Rios, Jamaica WI
