****Cross Post Freely**** "We Are Family" On February 27th, the notice circulated about a sweet dog that was going to be put to death if a home wasn't found for her immediately. You know the type....the ones that break our hearts a little more every time we read another one. The notice read: "#A749778 Tammy Meet Tammy A749778. This elegant girl is a 1 year 40 lb. spayed German Shepherd mix. Tammy came to the Staten Island shelter on 2/21/08 as a stray. She is very timid but as sweet as can be. She gets along with other dogs. Tammy needs some TLC and she would be more than happy to give some back. Please help Tammy find her forever home!!!!!" An activist in our community felt the tug on her heart and responded to the urgent plea and within days, Tammy moved to Manhattan. She landed in a wonderful loving home and now is a sister to a happy-go lucky boy-dog named Taxi and a group of very brave and independant cats. Her new life called for a new name and she was christened

“Cabbie”. A lovable girl, it didn’t take long until Cabbie became part of our family and has even been known to attend WAR protests with her brother Taxi. The cats get to stay home and rule the roost while the dogs are working the picket line! <>Cabbie loves to run and play in the grass and has been working hard to figure out what this "housebreaking" thing is all about. One of the things she enjoys the most is running in Central Park late at night when the park allows dogs to be off leash. She runs like the wind and it makes her so very happy. Just when she was thinking that things couldn't get any better, everything changed in an instant.<><>On April 5th, while the WAR community was mourning the passing of Camille's companion cat Sophie and Sherry's companion dog Sandy,

another sad event was unfolding in Central Park. Cabbie was enjoying her regular evening off-leash run in the park, when something distracted her. In a flash, she ended up on Central Park West and was the victim of a "hit and run" car accident. Luckily, Cabbie survived and was rushed to the Emergency Vet Hospital, where she spent the next several days under heavy medication. She was badly bruised and cut up and xrays revealed a severely fractured femur. Her prognosis for a full recovery was good; but, she would need major surgery to rebuild her severely shattered femur. The bills for her medical care and hospital stay have already exceeded $6,000.00. Cabbie’s guardian is a dedicated activist and always gives her all to others that are in need. Now it is our chance to do something for her and for Cabbie.
