Guest guest
Dear Pet Lover, They stepped out of dirty metal cages, some touching solid ground for the first time in their lives. Like newborn puppies, the dogs wobbled with uncertainty. .. their muscles wasted from years of immobility and the pads of their feet sore and cut from being confined to unlined wire coops. There were hundreds and hundreds of them... filthy and so matted that some could barely open their eyes. All were victims of what turned out to be the largest puppy mill surrender in the history of Virginia. The 1,100 dogs and puppies removed from the breeding facility had lived a life of deprivation. .. never knowing the joys of open spaces, toys, and love and affection. Instead, they’d received only enough food and water to survive in their cages. But after a five-month investigation, authorities were ready to launch a massive rescue effort -- and thanks to the help of PetSmart Charities® and dozens of animal shelters all along the East Coast -- these animals would finally be saved from a life of neglect. PetSmart Charities® immediately dispatched our Emergency Relief Waggin'SM to the staging area -- a 53-foot trailer packed with enough food, crates, beds, tents, generators and other items needed to set up a temporary shelter. With proper resources from PetSmart Charities®, rescuers were able to safely remove all 1,100 dogs from the deplorable conditions of the puppy mill. At first, some of the dogs were reluctant to emerge from their cages... cowering when the doors opened. One 4-year-old dog had spent her entire life in a crate, delivering litter after litter. But once they were groomed, vaccinated and given plenty of food, the dogs gratefully accepted the care and attention of which they had long been deprived. As the dogs and puppies received much-needed care, plans were made to transport all 1,100 dogs to shelters -- up and down the East Coast -- where adoptive families eagerly awaited. Happily, all of the dogs have now been given second chances at life. PetSmart Charities® is proud to provide much-needed support in events like this puppy mill rescue, in the wake of natural disasters, in hoarding cases or in any situation where lives are in danger. With your support, PetSmart Charities® will always be ready to help -- whether there are a thousand lives in danger, or a single animal in need. Please be as generous as you can.
