Blount man injured in hunting accident

By Rusty Marks

Staff writer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - A hunter was injured this morning when he accidentally shot himself in the foot off of Campbell's Creek Drive.

Randy Elswick, 54, of Blount, was hunting about nine miles out Campbell's Creek when the accident occurred around 6 a.m., said Sgt. Keith Vititoe of the Kanawha County Sheriff's Department. Vititoe said Elswick was loading a .30-30 lever-action rifle when the weapon went off, striking Elswick in the right foot.

"He was disobeying two of the cardinal rules of firearms safety," Vititoe noted. "Keep your finger off the trigger, and keep it pointed in a safe direction." Um, yeah, if you can't figure that out......

Elswick told deputies he had just bought the rifle and was not familiar with its operation. (But he can get a license to go shooting).

Vititoe said Elswick's son brought him several miles down the road to meet deputies and emergency responders.

Vititoe said the shooting appeared to be purely accidental. "There are no suspicious circumstances," he said. Just the usual negative IQ found in most hunters.

Elswick was taken to CAMC General Hospital. Vititoe said his injuries did not appear to be serious.
