EMERGENCY

APPEAL

Animal SOS Sri Lanka

Registered Charity: 1119902

Emergency

funding is required to build a small clinic in Sri Lanka to immediately save

the lives and suffering of 1,000's of strays animals.

Sri

Lanka became the focus of interest for our charity due to the appalling

animal suffering and the sheer scale of it - the distinct lack of animal

welfare standards and an obvious short-fall in veterinary centres / groups

working specifically for the street animals. There is simply nowhere

long-term to take desperately ill, injured and dying animals. No safe haven

for abandoned pups, kittens and animals needing intensive care or a sanctuary

base.

" Of all the

animals that suffer inhumane treatment at our human hands, the canines

undergo the worst plight "

(The

Island Newspaper - Sri Lanka, 13th March 2007).

There

are thousands of stray cats and dogs in Sri Lanka facing a multitude of horrors

in their daily struggle for life-starvation,dehydration, disease, cruelty,

injuries on the roads.

Our

charity has been working in partnership with Sri Lanka to help alleviate the

suffering of the animals from Colombo down to the south where we

have our base. We give strays an initial assessment and where

necessary we take them to Sri Lankan veterinary services for

vaccinations, sterilisation, blood testing etc. Taking a stray animal to

these veterinary services can be very time consuming, often taking

hours, which keeps us from treating other strays in the south.

Our

mission in Sri Lanka is -

To offer a safe haven for primarily street dogs (but other stray animals also

to be helped).

A sanctuary base for long-term disabled animals - those who have difficulty

coping on the streets post trauma where they can live out the rest of their

lives in peace.

A well equipped surgical facility to offer quality medical care and

operations, proper treatments and nutrition.

To introduce modern protocols and methods in veterinary care by having

volunteer vets working alongside Sri Lankan vets training in techniques,

sharing skills, and ultimately raising standards in veterinary care.

The rescue of pups and kittens from rubbish heaps and roadsides and to

operate a re-homing/adoption scheme

Implementing a co-ordinated sterilisation/neutering programme and full

vaccination programme with the aim to reduce the numbers of stray animals and

risks of rabies in animals and humans.

Routine blood testing and prompt treatment of tropical and common diseases.

Parasite eradication especially tick vectors.

To provide suitable facilities and kennelling: maternity, recovery, isolation

and intensive care.

To work alongside the government and authorities to introduce effective

animal welfare legislation and regulations.

To create a kinder and more compassionate society for animals through animal

welfare education- securing a future for these otherwise destitute and doomed

animals.

The

rewards are high, to see animals that were suffering and dying become

healthy is wonderful. To further give them a chance of finding a loving

home is something that we will always strive for. The above photos show

two dogs that were recently found by us, we gave them treatment, care and love,

they now live in a loving home in Sri Lanka.

Due to

YOU we now have a base in Sri Lanka and we are building our refuge

where stray animals in our care will find sanctuary. Working in

partnership with Sri Lankans our project is progressing but due to the

recession, that is hitting us all, we now have a serious shortfall in

funding.

To become operational we only need to build a clinic on our land. We have

many volunteer veterinary professionals waiting to come and work with us to

carry out sterilisations and vaccinations. Without a clinic they cannot carry

out that critical work which will save thousands of stray animals from

suffering and death.

Our

eventual aim is to build a veterinary clinic of excellence on our land,

housing the latest in equipment and technology. Due to the recession we know

that it may take some time to raise the funds to do that and with the

constant reminder of thousands of suffering animals around our

land, we know that we must build an interim clinic. This will allow us to

immediately start reducing the number of suffering and dying animals in

the South of Sri Lanka.

We have carefully assessed the minimum that is required to build an

operational clinic on our land. To achieve this we need to raise $30,000

(£20,000) before the end of February 2009 in order to meet the planned

arrival of professional veterinary volunteers who wish to help us in our

work.

Thousands of suffering animals can be helped with such a clinic, we have

everything else in place, volunteers who understand the enormity of the

suffering in Sri Lanka are ready to join us in partnership as soon as we are

operational.

We never forget that we are here because of YOU, it is

your support that has enabled us to get this far. If you are able

to help us take that next step toward becoming fully operational,

please help us raise the amount we need for our emergency clinic.

Help us save thousands of lives and

stop the suffering.
