Guest guest
Dear Companion Pet Lovers ~ Our Ohio legislators, including Governor Strickland, and the Farm Bureau are proposing an amendment to the Ohio constitution which will create an Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board (scroll down for more details on these hearings). It is the belief of many humane advocates that the true purpose of this in-house monitoring council is to stop or hinder any ballot issue (similar to Prop 2 introduced and passed in California) that HSUS or others may propose to help animals in factory farms (cafos -- confined animal feeding operations). If these resolutions are passed on Wed., June 24, we are confident the Farm Bureau will use various "scare tactics" to convince Ohio voters to pass the resolutions during the November elections. Below is a message from Dean Vickers, HSUS State Director, regarding these proposals. We are very opposed to the resolutions. And yes, it is scheduled for a sponsor testimony and vote on the same day. [June 24] The Farm Bureau knew that it could not win if HSUS backed a ballot campaign in Ohio, so they put their money towards a different approach, their legislators. The intent of the bill would be to stop anyone outside of the big Agra industry from having any impact on what they do and how they do it. To get a better perspective on the leadership driving the Ohio Farm Bureau, I invite you to read the following comments shared by Jack Fisher, Executive Vice President, published in a May 12, 2009 article, 'Farm Bureau Center to elevate animal issues': "Animal rights activists are very accomplished at manipulating public opinion," Fisher said. "They make what sound like simple demands regarding animals when in reality their true goal is to give animals status equal to humans." Please join Columbus Top Dogs in taking time to contact your state Senator and House Representative, asking them to OPPOSE these resolutions! You can locate contact information for both legislators by visiting Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Thanks everyone for your kind consideration.
