We recently bought some Shredded wheat mini biscuit cereal that was frosted

and the strawberry one. I was shocked when later we discovered they both had

gelatin in them. Have you noticed this?

That is what we were wondering. It is disturbing that they are finding more

and more things to put this stuff into. Ugh......... Post mini wheats don't,

because I checked that box. It had no frosted coating or those vanilla and

strawberry ones on them. We love snacking on those, so now we are back to those

only.

Gelatin is a cheap way to make things hold together. Sure, they can use

plant-based binders but using a leftover ingredient is cheaper and faster.

It's sad.

It's in tons of medications too, especially generic RX and OTCs, and most

people have no clue. If you have a capsule it's probably made from gelatin.

Other common items with gelatin are toothpaste, ice cream, most vitamins,

jellies and jams

it's not just ap roblem for vegetarians, but also people of certain

religious beliefs because most of these products don't use kosher or halal

gelatin.

That is a bummer. Must be they put in

the frosting part? Thanks for letting

us know. Maybe we should write the company

and complain; were they veggie safe in the past?

I'm asking because I am more of a hippy homemade

granola-meuseli type person so I don't buy boxed

cereals very much, but if they changed their

ingredient list then I would be willing to send

them an email inquiry to ask them why they

changed and tell them it is going to hurt their

sales with the vegetarian demographic. :)

Bummer, I avoid the strawberry cereals because they have red dye

usually, but I have eaten frosted wheat in the past without noticing

the gelatin...If you eat yogurt, that's another thing that has

gelatin hiding in some brands.

Try Kashi Organic Promise. They have one lightly sweetened and another

cinnamon. I like the cinnamon.

I love museli cereal also. Do you make your own? If so please share the

recipe. Well I have resisted buying it in the past, so haven't checked before.

I just always thought it was powdered sugar added to the outside, so was

avoiding buying it for that reason. I decided to give it a try and bought some

the other day. Big mistake.

I've never seen it in a jelly or jam. Usually they use pectin. Which

toothpastes use it? I know Tom's and Jason brands do not use any animal

products in their toothpaste (with the exception of propolis varieties).

Most of the major brands test on animals anyway, so I usually stick with

these brands. Most of the more natural ones say right on them that they

don't contain any animal products.

Unfortunately most products with that weird hard frosting on them (like on

frosted mini wheats) contain gelatin. Unfrosted mini wheats are good though

when you sprinkle them with raisins and pop tarts come without frosting too. :)

I think they use the gelatin in the frosting which seems kind of silly

since the frosting is dried out and crunchy.

Poptarts are the same way. There is gelatin in the ones with frosting,

but unfrosted ones are vegan! Isn't it strange that the filling

doesn't have gelatin, but then they go use it on the frosting?

Not that I eat poptarts very often, but thought I'd mention it...

Here is a list of animal ingredients from PETA for people looking to

cut all animal ingredients out of their diet:

http://www.caringconsumer.com/resources_ingredients_list.asp

I personally find it very hard to shop outside of the health food

market... especially with a vegan husband. The only poptarts he can eat

are Nature's Valley (I think that is the brand) unfrosted ones.
