Guest guest
I started buying the Vegenaise mayo some time back. Does anyone have problems with it breaking down in the jar within six weeks or so of buying it? Mine started with that about then and just is very runny now. Is it still safe to use? Maybe it is only the organic version? Thanks. Irene
Guest guest
Have you kept it refrigerated the whole time? You can't store it on a shelf until opened. It has to stay refrigerated even prior to first opening of it and thereafter. BTW I haven't had this problem Judy - irene947 Saturday, August 19, 2006 11:17 AM Veganaise I started buying the Vegenaise mayo some time back. Guest guest
Yep, kept it refrigerated...bought it in the refrigerated section in the store so knew that is where it belonged. But, I rarely use it so maybe it just breaks down after a bit like my homemade mayo does. Since I rarely use it I will look for a very small jar the next time. Guest guest
Hi Irene, I was thrilled to find the vegenaise some time back at our little Drug Emporium here in Waco. In the refrigerated case there were 3 (actually 4) to choose from. 3 in the smaller jars (grapeseed, original, canola) and 1 in the quart size (canola). I bought the green canola oil pint first and loved it and used it up pretty quickly. Then I decided to buy the quart size because it was a better deal. All the quart comes in is the green label. I did notice that with the quart size that before I used it up it became more of a liquid consistency. Don't know how long it took it to be that way, though. It didn't really separate, but it was thinner....so I made a conscious effort to use the little bit that was left in some different things...taste was not affected. So at Drug Emporium we have the pint jars at $3 something, and the quart jar at $4.75. I keep wondering whether I ought to try the grapeseed or original, but they cost so much more! Has anyone noticed a difference that would make it worthwhile to try the smaller sizes? BTW--I'm pretty sure it's still safe to use if you've kept it at the right temp and not left it sitting open on the table or dipped contaminated implements (LOL!) into it etc. Paula Posted by: " irene947 " irene947 irene9471 Sat Aug 19, 2006 9:19 am (PST) I started buying the Vegenaise mayo some time back. Guest guest
I've been using veganaise for a couple of years and have never had that problem. Mine is the organic veganiaise and I usually have the jar for 2 to 3 months before it's empty. I'm hoping it was just that individual jar. And you must keep it refrigerated. Guest guest
I've had this problem. It usually only happens when the jar is nearly empty, so I usually just throw it out. Is it bad? I don't know. It never smells bad. It just looks very unappetizing. I think Nayonaise is vegan, but I didn't like it the one time I had it. I was so excited to find Veganaise. I'm originally from central PA, where every recipe starts with a cup of mayo. Haaaaa! (Not that I cook like that, but it's nice to have the option.) Guest guest
Six weeks sounds like a long time to have anything sitting open in the refrigerator. Granted, I am a bacteria-phobe... Guest guest
It doesn't smell bad or taste bad, just that your right, it looks unappetizing and actually only works on the sandwiches since it is so runny salads would be too runny. It was the larger quart jar and didn't get runny until nearly empty too but I haven't remembered to replace it so keep using it. I will stick to buying the small jars, although more expensive. I hope they have the small jar in organic though. I didn't like Nayonnise either, but the Vegenaise will do. I do miss the Best Food Mayonnaise/Hellman's. Wish they would figure out how to make it vegan. When I make my own it still has that kind of weird taste. Artichokes aren't quite the same without Best Food and dipping it in anything else hasn't worked. Irene - " Lisa Veg*n " <vegetariankids > I've had this problem. Guest guest
I have never had a jar last that long before, so I have never had to deal with it breaking down. We usually use one jar up in 2 weeks to a month at most. I just checked on their website and it states that Vegenaise has a SHELF LIFE: Guaranteed minimum • 6 Months Refrigerated So that leads me to think it should be alright to use if you give it a stir and it has been kept cold enough for that amount of time. You could always email them from their contact info on the website to ask just to be sure though: http://www.followyourheart.com/vegenaise.php ~ PT ~ " It is a paradox in the contemporary world that in our desire for peace we must willingly give ourselves to struggle. Guest guest
I went to the site and e-mailed them my questions about it and outlining for them how I had maintained it with the condition of it now. Hopefully I will hear from them soon. - " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll I have never had a jar last that long before, so I have never had to deal with it breaking down.
