Guest guest
Hi all ~ We bought some broccoli at the farmers market over the weekend and went to use it in a recipe last night. Then we ran into a big bug issue. Which is fine, I don't mind seeing bugs/holes in produce (lknowing they're organic, etc). However, how do you get those suckers out of the broccoli? We rinsed them and placed the clean ones in a bowl. When I picked up the rinsed pieces, I saw more bugs that had come out of hiding. There's got to be an easy way to get those suckers off. And no, we didn't want to eat them. :-) Suggestions? Thanks! Cindi
Guest guest
Interesting. I wonder if this is what has happened to folks over in Japan, that my friend there knows. He told us that when he tries to get folks to eat it there, they won't because all the folks that he has come across, think it is full of bugs. LOL I've never found a bug in it, but then again, I've never organic broccoli. Sorry for your dilema. I don't have any suggestions. I'd be squimish too Cindi. Maybe you could try submerging the broccoli under water for awhile, rather than just rinsing it? I'm not sure I want to know, but what kinds of bug were they? -- Liz
Guest guest
All homegrown broccoli I've had was full of worms not bugs. I don't know how to get rid of them either. It does kill your appetite when they are falling out of the cooked broccoli onto your plate. Guest guest
They were definitely not worms. They were small, grey-ish multi- legged little guys. And there were TONS of them. There's another vendor at the market that we've bought organic broccoli from and had no problems; perhaps it was just this one guy... We did try to soak them and it didn't seem to help either. Oh well, our tofu and broccoli in garlic sauce became something else last night due to the invasion. Will have to inspect the heads a lot better before purchase next time! Thanks for your responses everyone! Guest guest
Don't feel bad, Cindi! That has happened to me as well. It was organic broccoli and from a regular supermarket. Those little bugs are so close in size and color to the buds on the broccoli florets and they hide in them so well. Hard to get rid of, too. I used a vinegar water soak and it helped. But it was difficult to rid of them all. Now I inspect my organic broccoli very well before buying. People probably wonder what I am looking for! Like with Horton Hears A Who... remember that cartoon/book buy Dr. Seuse? *lol* ~ PT ~ The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak. ~ Hans Hofman ~~~*~~~*~~~> , " Cindi " <cindi93069 wrote: > > They were definitely not worms.
