Neat Multivitamin & Skin Allergy Q

What a find! After someone on another list (one for rats, of all things) brought

it to my attention that most multivitamins are pretty much just industrial

waste, I went in search of something better. I found them! They're from Whole

Foods and the brand seems to be " Mini's " . They're tiny little round tablets, 72%

real food. I got them for me and my dogs and rats. They were about $12 for 90 of

them. Needless to say, they are vegetarian. It's a neat thing in case anyone is

interested.

Now for my question: I'm having an allergic reaction to something, I don't know

what. The same reaction happened once when I was in middle school and once while

I was in high school. A guinea pig was the culprit the first time, bullnettle

the second time. My face gets all itchy, then it swells, then it hurts to touch

it or talk or eat or move, pretty much. I'm taking Benadryl for it now, but the

stuff seriously knocks me out and today I was absolutely useless. Anyone know of

something else I could use that won't knock me out? I'm probably going to go to

the doctor, so prescription suggestions are fine since pretty much all I have to

do is tell the dr. what I want and they'll give it to me. I'm having all these

skin issues lately... eczema, a skin infection, and now this!! I'm absolutely

desperate to make this go away before it gets as bad as it did before. Thanks

for any suggestions!

Hope you find out the source of the skin issue. If you are not doing anything

any differently (soaps, foods, new clothes items, etc), I wouldn't have an idea.

Glad you found some vitamins. I have tried so many things, too...Nature

Sunshine and my lastest IntraMax, but it is on the expensive side. My sister

says the USANA has a good product, but it is expensive, too. I say whatever

works for the person, but the bottom line is nothing takes the place of healthy,

nutritious food containing the essential vitamins.

Dear Kadee M,

Im a doctor, and it sounds like you might be allergic to a variety

of things. You should go to an ENT doctor, specializing in Allergy.

They can test you to see what it is you are allergic to. Also,

Benadryl is highly sedating and dehydrating, as you know! Claritin

and generic Allegra may be better for you. Good luck!

Thanks... I've really dreaded the day I have to get tested for allergies... we

just moved to Illinois from Texas... everything is different! I've had the

sniffles pretty much since we got here... I'll try switching to one of those

other allergy medicines. Thanks a lot!

Aha! That explains a lot. The Midwest used to be a river basin. That

being said, there is a lot of pollen that comes through that is from

other places in the US. You may be allergic to things simply because

of your environment. Immunotherapy may be a way for you to get rid

of your allergies permanently. Talk to your doctor about it. Its

mostly covered by insurance, but it is high maintainance and

frankly, a pain in the ___. In the meantime, use antihistamines like

Allegra or Claritin (non-drowsy, 24 hour relief).

I grew up in New England and went through allergy testing and shots as a teen.

Helped marginally... I do know other peopple that have had good results though.

Moved back to New England for 2.5 years 3 years ago (back in CA now) and the

allergies hit like a ton of bricks. I turned to herbs with some success. Kept

my head clear with only the occasional sniffle. I got the extracts of Yarrow,

Horse Tail, Nettle Blend, and Devil's Claw, took the recommended doses 3 times a

day for 2 days and it cleared me up. I used the doses once a day as a

maintenance for a while, then I went off and when I had problems as things

bloomed I would use them 3 times for one day and then the maintenance for a few

days with good results. This combination of herbs is good for thinning the

mucus and reducing inflammation. If you'd like to try an herbal remedy, I'd

recommend this. Kathy

<< we just moved to Illinois from Texas... >>

I live in northern llinois. The weather has been unusual this fall, and those

of us with hayfever didn't go thru the usual two-week misery at the end of

August, but have been sniffling mildly for a couple of months, instead.

Hopefully colder weather will clear it all up.

Also, instead of the usual allergy medications, I've had good luck with taking

an occasional Excedrin sinus (Phenylephrine HCI 5 mg and acetaminophen 325 mg).

Hi Kadee,

Sorry to hear about your allergy. I've battled my fair share of skin

allergies and I know how rotten it can be. I tend to favor natural

remedies to things and have found them to be just as effective and

without the unwanted side effects.

I've found a wonderful homeopathic cream called Florasone that works

amazingly well on my eczema and hives. It's non-steroidal as well,

so you don't have to worry about prolonged use. It's a little

pricey, but I think much better than itching and scratching.

Another nice thing to try -- even if you don't have a skin flare-up! -

is a soak or compress with chamomile and/or chickweed. For the face,

wrap a handful of the herbs in a towel (use an old one, as they WILL

stain) and completely soak it. Wring it dry and then apply directly

to your skin. I've also heard of using burdock root for this, but I

prefer chamomile. For the rest of you, you can throw the herbs

directly into the bathwater and soak away. You can also try an

oatmeal poultice. Easy as it sounds -- dampen oatmeal, apply to

face. If you don't want to use " normal " oatmeal, Aveeno sells

convenient pouches.

Finally, consider adding a source of Omega 3's to your diet. A

deficiency in O-3 has been linked to skin conditions. Flaxseed oil

is an easy way to get a jolt -- mix it in w/ cottage cheese or

yogurt. Of try having a bowl of O-3 fortified cereal - Nature's Path

makes a very yummy one.

And, of course, make sure you take good care of your emotional needs

during all of this. Stress can wreak havoc on your skin, so be good

to yourself!

I hope these help. Good luck and keep us posted!

I will definitely look into those things... I went to the doctor last

night and was shocked at the amount of medicine they brought out to

me- two bottles of antibiotics that I'm supposed to take two of, FOUR

times a day, a steroid I'm supposed to take three times a day, and

some kind of allergy pill I'm supposed to take four times a day as

well!! No way!! I told my husband that amount of medicine is

*definitely* going to kill something!!

Funny you mention that about stress, ever since our carbon monoxide

detector went off, we've gotten griped at about the smell of our pet

mice (male mice smell, their cages are always clean but it's just the

way they are), had three inspections of our home (military housing),

and they're planning three more, implying that our house is dirty

because we have pet rodents, which it is not! Anyway, I've been a

wreck. This allergy rash on my face showed up in the midst of all this

stress. I also have eczema, which in the past two days has started

spreading over the rest of my hand (it was just on my thumb). I think

you're onto something.... :)I'll see if I can find those things on the

internet, because I'm certainly not going to be taking all this

medicine the doctor gave me. One pill twice a day, that's one thing.

This totals up to 15 pills a day, not including my

vitamins/supplements and birth control. Sigh. Thanks for the tips,

though. Should be very helpful!

I hope some cold weather will kill whatever is causing my sniffles! I've always

had seasonal allergies, but here it's been from July (when we moved here) till

now. At least in Texas everything burned up by June and didn't bother me. :)

Hey Kadee..

sorry to hear about your woes and your recent visit to the doctor. I

hate the way doctors over-prescribe medication, its wrong and

unecessary. I would definitely try the herbal route. But if you have

a chronic sinus infection, then it should be addressed with the

antibiotics. Hope today is better.

I took about half the dose of the antibiotics and one allergy pill, and I hate

to admit it but my allergy is better and the lymph node by my ear isn't swollen

anymore. I won't take the full dose, but maybe half doses will do the trick. I

am going to see what herbal stuff I can find on the internet and try it out. :)

sorry to hear about your woes and your recent visit to the doctor. I

hate the way doctors over-prescribe medication, its wrong and

unecessary. I would definitely try the herbal route. But if you have

a chronic sinus infection, then it should be addressed with the

antibiotics. Hope today is better.

You have to be careful of taking only half of the amount of an antibiotic or

stopping to soon. Take the full amount of antibiotic, for the prescribed

amount of time, so your body doesn't build up a resistance to that particular

antibiotic and then you a relapse and need a different antibiotic to take that

time. It really happens that way. I'm a Med. Tech that does the blood testing

to see what antibodic's a particular strain of bacteria is susceptible to and

which ones they are resistant to.

Yuck, I think I'll just stop taking it altogether then. The dr. told me to take

8 per day, and that's just seriously overkill for such a small little thing.

I've looked on the internet a bit and hopefully I'll be ordering something

tonight, something that will help without harming...

Well if an infection is really bad, then because of so many resistant bacteria's

out there, a lot of doctor's are giving 2 at a time to get rid of it. He may

have given you a lower dosage and so that is the reason that you need to take it

4 times a day, as opposed to 2-3 times a day. Some medicene's don't have a time

released formula for them and have to be taken in smaller doses to keep it at a

set level in your body and to prevent side effects.

Judy, that's what I've always heard from my drs. and have learned from

my reading, is that if you take just a couple of the antibiotics doses

and they seem to make you feel better, then they have just started on

the job of killing some of the bacteria. You feel better initially,

but those resistant bacteria are still hanging in there. When you

discontinue the antibiotice because you're feeling better, then the

stronger, more resistant bacteria get a real fun little play ground to

come back and make the infection a lot worse. Take the full course of

the antibiotics and kill out the whole infection. Don't give the

hangers-on a chance to come back and make themselves even stronger and

harder to fight.

need a different antibiotic to take that time. It really happens

that way. I'm a Med. Tech that does the blood testing to see what

antibodic's a particular strain of bacteria is susceptible to and

which ones they are resistant to.

What were the doctor's reasons for prescribing each medication? If you don'y

know, call and ask. Also ask what the alternatives are, the side effects, and

what to avoid. Check with two pharmasists before taking any herbs or other

supplements to be sure there won't be any drug interactions.

Antibiotics are for a skin infection I am just getting rid of... I guess he

didn't go for my silly excuse about how the ointment the last doctor gave me

cured it last time? No idea about the steroid, I'm not even taking that one. The

allergy pill I take at night just for the rash on my face, which is almost

completely gone. These Air Force doctors haven't got a clue about the

supplements I take, I tried once and they seem to be of the attitude that if

it's not a prescription it probably can't have any effect at all, much less one

on their Powerful and Mighty Prescriptions. Sigh. One day I'm going to get a

holistic doctor and he'll be all I ever need. :)
