[Raw Food] what is tahini?

Hey everyone....

I have never heard of this and wouldnt begin to know where to look for it in

a store.

What is it,

what form does it come in? Tube, jar, bottle

what does it resemble in taste!

Thanks!

Tahini is ground sesame seeds. It comes in a jar like peanut butter. the taste

sort of resembles peanut butter too. Just make sure you get raw tahini because

it does come in raosted form.

Have a gret day,

Tahini is ground up sesame seeds (like peanut butter is ground peanuts - very

cacinogenic, don't reccommend it!)

Tahini is very earthy in taste...it's kind of bitter. I don't know how else

to describe it. It's really high in calcium, and when added to recipes it gives

them a little extra kick.

Make sure you find raw tahini. One brand that I am aware of is Living Tree

Community Foods (about $8 for 16oz here in San Diego). Some brands say that

they are raw, but the machinery in the production process heats up so much that

it kills all the enzymes in the product. This is the same with all nut butters.

All of Living Tree's products are truly raw.

since it is made here too.

It is a sesame seed paste. You find it in jars and can near peanut butter in

the grocery stores. Health food stores have a good variety of brands. I like

the MaraNatha brand the best. It stays blended better. Here is some more info

on Tahini and this brand to look at.

This is a tasty item to have on hand. It is used in many Middle Eastern dishes

and dressings. Refrigerate this product after opening.

Re: has anyone 'corned' seitan?

Yup! It turned out pretty good, too! I just used a traditional corned beef

recipe, not much change at all, except no slab of flesh! ha! :)

I love their almond butter (MaraNatha-creamy and roasted). Do you

have a preference for the tahini (raw vs roasted)?

I've always bought the raw and love it. I love almost all nuts and seed better

raw, rather than roasted unless they have been frozen and then I dry roast them

a bit.

I love their almond butter and their cashew butter toooo. So very good.
