Guest guest
Hi...I'm new to the group, but it looks really nice so far. Well, I'm writing this post in response to the signature quote: How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be ''American'' before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, and having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries? Edith Wharton, American author, 1862 - 1937 I think this is very interesting because a few weeks ago I went to a play called 'Miasma', and much of it centered around the beef industry and how destructive it is. Though it wasn't the only point of the play, it gave some good reasons for being vegetarian. Well, I was looking at the playwright's note on the handout, and his last paragraph said something like this, " I wish I could say that after writing this I am now enjoying a healthy vegetarian diet, but I'm not. Even after visiting slaughterhouses and knowing where my beef comes from, I still eat hamburgers. I am just very much an American. " I was so infuriated with this; he basically blamed his meat eating on being too much of an American. What kind of a message is this? Especially the fact that he acknowledged something was wrong, he just didn't want to do anything about it. ~Jackie , " PuterWitch " <puterwitch wrote: > > you are so welcome, and that is a great idea. > > hugs, > Chanda > - > C Jackson > > Wednesday, October 04, 2006 4:15 AM > Re: off topic, worth the watch, FREE HUGS!!! > > > OH thanks Chanda!!! > If you have taken the time to see this, reward > yourself!!!!! > I wrote him a thank you note too!!!! > C. > > --- PuterWitch <puterwitch wrote: > > > http://www.freehugs.org/ > > free hugs, > > Chanda > > > > [Non-text portions of this message have been > > removed] > > > > > > How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be ''American'' before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, and having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?
