Truth be known, I felt as if I were walking through a minefield while perusing the produce section last night. I don't feel too confident about any produce at this point. Each time something like this happens it enforces what I've always believed. Our food suppy is not nearly as safe as they'd like you to believe. I was reading something this a.m. about produce being prepped out in the fields as opposed to indoors in a (hopefully) more sanitary environment. This is done to save money. There was even talk about the location of the toilets the workers use and their proximity to the produce. I just find this whole thing disgusting and disturbing. Guest guest
I know this doesn't help with an e-coli-like concern, but I thought it might be a good time to mention something I learned recently. In the U.S., produce has a 4-digit code. You know those little stickers on the fruit and veggies? Check them and you'll see a 4-digit number. Now, that 4 digit number, which identifies the variety and species of the item, can be preceded with an optional 5th digit. If there are 5 digits and the number starts with a 9, it's organic. If it's 5 digits and starts with an 8, it's genetically engineered. Since the seller isn't likely to mention that the item is genetically modified, this can be handy to know. There is no digit for e-coli. :-( Sharon TendrMoon wrote: > In a message dated 9/16/06 12:48:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > abbey_road3012 writes: > Truth be known, I felt as if I were walking through a minefield while > perusing the produce section last night. >

Guest guest
Even if there was a digit code for e-coli, the stickers would be so small I doubt we could see them. Debbie
Guest guest
Sharon, This is good to know. Is this code just for produce or is it also for canned and frozen food?
