Guest guest
Is it true what vegans say that we are actually killing calves by eating dairy products? I was told no matter what cheese I'd eat - animal or vegetable rennet - I would kill calves by simply eating cheese, because calves are taken away from their mothers and killed in order for us to take the milk? Guest guest
Sadly that is the truth. Guest guest
yes. A cow must be impregnated in order to lactate. Female babies are raised to be milking cows. Male babies are of no use to the dairy industry, and become " veal " . To say as little as possible here, lest I offend/upset someone: They are not allowed to build any muscle, because it wouldn't be " tender " . Guest guest
Cows don't have to have babies to lactate. They can give them hormones that trick the cow's body so it will think it is full term pregnant and produce the most amount of milk. We grew up in an area of dairy cows and they all said they did this. - Thia .... Saturday, October 14, 2006 1:26 PM Re: Calves yes. A cow must be impregnated in order to lactate. Guest guest
Also they said that the cows will continue to produce milk as long as you milk them once a day even without hormones, but it won't be as much. Probably like a human mother, she produces milk as long as she is nursing daily. Judy - wwjd Saturday, October 14, 2006 1:47 PM Re: Calves Cows don't have to have babies to lactate. Guest guest
I do hope you're right, Judy. I feel like crying all day and I feel a terrible sense of guilt, but still I don't feel strong enough to take the big step and go vegan. Thank you all for answering. Guest guest
well then, I guess the answer to ma_doba' s question would depend on which dairy the milk is coming from. Guest guest
The male calves are sold for veal, and I'm sure the females are either made into more dairy cows or sold for meat. Letting the calf nurse would decrease the amount of milk gotten from each cow. Kadee Sedtal Messenger with Voice. Make PC-to-Phone Calls to the US (and 30+ countries) for 2¢/min or less. Guest guest
From what I understand of the process, hormones are given to make the cow *keep* producing, not start the process... even if hormones are used to stimulate lactation, how healthy is that for whoever drinks the milk?? Guest guest
my understanding is that the cow does not produce the amount of milk they want witihout having a calf on a regular basis. They then add the hormones to increase milk production.
