Guest guest
Hey everyone, my name is Shelly and I live in Texas. I was raised on meat and potatoes (what else is there in texas, right?), but due to several reasons including preference, I am trying to switch my family to a vegetarian diet. My husband doesn't mind, actually he is supportive - but I won't ask him to give up his barbecue yet. I have a couple of questions, from what I have seen of the posts I am sure I will get great answers. My daughter is 4 - - what are the best ways for her to get all the protein in a veggie diet - is vegetable protein processed by the body the same as meat (I'm sure it's easier for the body to process veggies, but do they get the same nutrients? - I know spinach, tofu, dairy, and nuts are good sources of protein, what else is there? We don't do fast food at our house, and she has been raised on veggies so that's not a problem. She just doesn't care for tofu, and I don't want her to get burned out on cheese, yogurt, and nuts. thanks so much, and I can't wait to try out some of these recipes... shelly
Guest guest
Welcome Shelly! have a look at this site: http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/proteinexplain.html it is not protein you have to even think about, it is B-12, and you can get that from a multi vitamin or from nutritional yeast flakes which go well in soups, stews, shakes, anything really, on top of veggies, on top of pop corn, you name it. ) hugs, Chanda - lifeisgood111301 Monday, October 23, 2006 9:32 PM another new one Hey everyone, my name is Shelly and I live in Texas. Guest guest
Hi Shelly: Beans are a great souce of protein. You can do refried beans, rice and beans, bean burgers. My kids have been eating refried beans since they were probably 5 or 6 years old. They love them. I used to make my own as there weren't many good vegetarian brands out there. Now we have found more brands and they are pretty good, I always keep them on hand. Check out the files you will find lots of recipes to try. gayle shelly Mon, 23 Oct 2006 9:32 PM another new one Hey everyone, my name is Shelly and I live in Texas. Guest guest
Hi Shelly, what a wonderful opportunity you have with your kids! I homeschooled our youngest (very hyper and my husband and I did not want to just throw meds at him) through junior high and high school. As for getting them into the veg life, I agree with the suggestion of refried beans. After all, if it looks like junk food and tastes good....Of our four sons, two are primarily lacto-ovo vegan, and two are not. Fifty percent isn't bad. I'll try to post some of my stealth veggie recipes that I used when the carnivores lived here. Jeanne in Georgia, wondering who turned off the heat so early in the season! Guest guest
Thanks for all the great ideas, they will be a big help. I hadn't thought about the nutritional yeast flakes, we put it on popcorn all the time. My daughter is not big on beans, but I am thinking if I buy different, unusual varities, maybe she will want to try them. thanks again... Guest guest
To Jeannie...let me know if you find out who turned off the heat so early this fall. It is now truly cool in Michigan. Luanne
Guest guest
May be cool in Michigan, but it's REALLY cold in the mountains of Georgia. And you know what Atlanta schools did? They refused to turn on the heat in the schools. It's a policy that the heat doesn't come on until Nov. 1. I would be one furious mom.
