Guest guest
HI Ruth: I suggest the library. When I first switched to being vegetarian I went to the library and took out all sorts of vegetarian cookbooks. I read most of them cover to cover and then tried different recipes. This was very educational. Also check out the files there are tons of tried and true recipes. Gayle
Guest guest
Hello, I am very new to this and was wondering if anyone had any book suggestions, cookbooks or informational books, for someone just starting to try and make these changes. Thanks, Ruth.
Guest guest
Hi Ruth, welcome to the Garden and the veggie way. My first veggie/primarily veggie cookbook/book was Diet For A Small Planet by Francis Moore Lappe, then her second book, Recipes For A Small Planet. Since it's original publication, it has been found that vegetarians don't need to do the protein complimentary (combines beans with corn, etc, to get the full nutritional use of the food), but it is still, IMO, a great beginner book. It has foods that are more easily accepted by a new vegetarian (again, just my opinion). The Diet For A Small Planet has more than just recipes, it shows things like nutrients in various foods, how much grain, water it takes to " grow " a pound of beef, etc, waste, and other things. In my over 20 years of being a lacto-ovo vegan, I have purchased four copies of the book. I have read a large number of veggie books/recipe books but hers is still my favorite. I'd suggest going to the public library (or research online) and actually look at books before plunking down the cash. I have several vegetarian cookbooks that I have never used, and seriously doubt I will. The good news is that Diet For A Small Planet is being re-released to honor its 20th anniversary. The best resource other than that one book is this group. You'll get support, guidance, recipes, heads up and friendship. Again, welcome to the garden. Guest guest
Hi Ruth, I asked the members here which were their favorites. One I really like, that was suggested by a member is: Favorite Brand Name Vegetarian Cooking http://tinyurl.com/yaef8x Vegetarian Times Vegetarian Beginner's Guide (Paperback) http://tinyurl.com/ymjlrm I bought both of these used through Amazon and they are both in wonderful condition. Favorite Brand has lots of pictures....I like that. And VT's Beginners Guide answers a lot of questions and gives lots of suggestions.
