Children Eating vegetarian

In a Buddhism Group I am a member of, another member stated that not

feeding growing children meat can stifle their growth. I find that

hard to believe. However, he claims that certain amino-acids are

crucial and can only be obtained by eating animal flesh. He also

claims that only a full grown person should be allowed to go

vegetarian/vegan.

By myself I was wondering if there are any cultures or people that

are known to only eat vegetarian since birth.

All the required amino acids are obtainable from plants. Whoever said that about

stunting children's growth by not feeding them meat has obviously not done any

research on the subject. Both my children have been vegetarian since conception

and are very normal physically, and advanced mentally. There's a religion I

believe in India called Jainism. They go so far that they will not even become

farmers for fear of killing a worm with the plow. You can bet they don't feed

their children any meat! I know a lot of Hindu people are vegetarians.

Most of my grandchildren are vege, and have not had a problem with it. I have

one daughter that rebelled and decided to be different and her children are sick

quite a bit, so I think eating meat is worse then raising them vegetarian. Judy

I'm with you Sharon....

My 11 1/2 year old is pretty vetetarian. My 4 year old prefers vegetarian to

meat. So we offer all choices and they understand the issues. So far they are

going vegetarian w/ me. :-)

There are plenty of Hindus who have never eaten meat. Some people are

ignorant. Some people are ignorant but happy to espouse theories as

hard fact, and can be so certain in their rightness that it makes one

question one's beliefs. :-)

I did raise my children to make the decision on their own - and at home

we are vegetarians. But I didn't let them eat meat because I was afraid

it would stunt their growth if they didn't. It was more due to the

meat-centric former husband and in-laws (who are all gourmet cooks).

And I have one child (almost 12) who has chosen to be vegetarian and one

child (age 14) who thinks it's nuts to forego all the delicious flesh

she enjoys. I'm not into judging other people's choices in this

regard. That's one thing I like about this group. :-)

Hi im new, just joining the conversation I hope thats ok.

I was told many people in China as well are vegitarians, partialy due to

econimics but also diet choices . Meat is expencive compared to vegstables.

Anyways, with so many vegistables to choose from, how could you not get all

the right nutrients.

Personaly im looking for as many vegan recipies because of my dairy and egg

allergies. I do eat seafood though becauase thats the only thing I cant give

up. Red meats and poultry are just gross and most make my ill when I eat.

We have several vegetarian friends and have known their children all their

lives. Three are adult vegetarians now and all are healthy people. A person

can have a lousy diet no matter what eating lifestyle he/she lives. Plants,

nuts, seeds, and all have everything we need.

I am a Seventh Day Adventist. We encourage the Vegetarian Diet and many studies

have found those that do this, that their life expectancy is 5-8 years longer

with a better quality of life to enjoy. Exercise, drinking 6-8 glasses of

water, fresh air and sunlight, plenty of sleep are also important, as is a faith

in a higher power. I've always been vegetarian and several generations in my

family are also on my dad's side. My children and my sister's children have

been raised Vegetarian and are very healthy!!! It never affected their height.

We've enjoyed a healthy life for the most part. Much of how tall one will be is

genetic. We are much healthier than most any meat eaters that we know. I

would not let another person tell you that you should not be raising your

children differently than what you have a deep conviction on, that is healthy

for them. Also if they never eat meat, it is much easier for them as an adult,

to not ever eat it.
