What did you do when you first discovered Tofu?

Hi all, I was going thru my old diarys and found a page that described

what It felt like, and how I prepared Tofu the very first time I came

acrossed it. The very first time I didn't know what to do with it so I

kept it in the fridge way past the expiration date and watched it

spoil and ferment. I then got a cookbook and actually made something

with it after that. Then I wasn't impressed with the taste and thought

it was over estimated. I think it took a month of doing different

things with tofu before I got the knack of how to use it. Now Tofu is

a regular part of my diet and I don't know what I would do without it.

I'd be interested in any thoughts about your first experience with

Tofu. Judy H

I bought it, cut a chunk out of the block and ate it.

Yes, just like that. I love it right out of the

container. Next time I tried eggless egg salad, then

the mock tuna salad, then it went from there. Now the

first time I saw tempeh it freaked me out, I thought

it was moldy, smelled strange and I wrapped it in file

and took it to the trash. That stuff scared me. I

love it now too.

That is great that you didn't hav3e to learn to like it Donna. I developed a

taste for Tempeh because a Deli in Bremerton used to sell a grilled Tempeh

sandwich that was absolutely delicious. They've since went out of business, but

it hooked me for life. Judy H

My first tofu experience was good. It was an " egg salad sandwich "

made by my Dad, who went vegetarian while my sister and I were still

young. She hasn't gone veg, but I did later, once in college.

Whenever a new vegetarian (macrobiotic) dish was offered up and her

opinion asked, she would always just say " it's INTERESTING. " LOL.

My first solo experience with tofu, however, was funny and not as

successful. I was talking with my cousin, also a young teenager,

like myself, at the time. I must have been raving over this thing

called tofu and my Dad's new eating habits. So, we asked my Aunt

to let us get a block of the firm, water-packed tofu for lunch.

We had no idea what to do with it and just ended up eating it plain.

We thought it was bland and had a weird texture. My tastes have

changed, and now, like Donna, it actually tastes good to me straight

from the package (though I don't eat it all that way, that's just

what I nibble while cooking up the rest, just like my veggies).

With tofu, we had a chef at our residence caffeteria who would always cook a

vegitarian stir fry and he suggested i try it. I was aprehensive at first

but I like most everything he cooked. So I tried it and found it was really

good. I think it depends what its cooked with and how its prepared.

My first expericience with tofu was great! It was at a wonderful chinese

restaurant that no longer exists. They would make things to order. The texture

was good and firm and the sauce was great. They really knew what to do with it.

I've since learned that freezing it and coating it in corn starch before frying

it is what does the trick.

A friend of mine's kids like to eat microwaved tofu! ewww!

We had a chinese restaurant that served the most delicious Tofu that you ever

tasted. But a couple other restaurants got started and she had to close down.

Story of my life(LOL). I haven't taste anything that good since. Judy H

In W. Houston, there's a place called The Bean Curd Store. All they do is

make tofu and bean curd products. There's nothing in the world better than

buying a brick size block of tofu still warm and sitting in the car eating it!!

I

never had tofu that tasted so good just plain!!
