Guest guest
I made this fudge the other day: http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/desserts/chocolate-fudge.htm and was pretty satisfied with the results. Some of the chips did not fully melt in the off-the-heat combining step, but that only made for yummy bits in an otherwise very smooth fudge (I personally would add nuts, but I was testing this out as a gift). The only thing I would change is to use a better chocolate next time. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog
Guest guest
Hi Erin I am interested in this recipe but vegan chocolate chips seem to be few and far between over here. Are these chips " milk " or bittersweet? I'm wondering if I could sub some finely chopped up 72% dark chocolate in their place or if I need to get hold of some soya or rice milk chocolate. I found some rice milk chocloate on the internet but it is rather expensive. I would probably add nuts as well ;-) Christie On 03/12/06, Erin <truepatriot wrote: > > > I made this fudge the other day: > > http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/desserts/chocolate-fudge.htm > > and was pretty satisfied with the results. Guest guest
Walmart brand [ " Great Value " ] simi-sweet chips are dairy free, and I believe it to be " accidentally " vegan- with the possible exception of maybe bone char in the processing of sugar [?]. At any rate, it is what I typically use when I need chocolate chips. Chocolates labeled and sold as " vegan " tend to be way too expensive to me; although I have tried some of them. [Trader Joe's has fantastic vegan French Truffles. YUM]. I don't believe I have ever seen vegan " milk " chocolates; but of course, that does not mean they aren't out there! Watch your " dark chocolates " --- not all are dairy free. Hershey's and others typically do add dairy even to the " dark " varieties. I've never understood why. Guest guest
Sunspire and Tropical Source both make vegan semisweet morsels. (You may have to get them on-line, say, at foodfightgrocery.com) Sunspire also makes carob chips, but be forewarned, they have two kinds and one contains whey. Weird. Next time, I will make this with a better chocolate. A 75%'er sounds about right. There is plenty of sugar. I just used a generic storebrand chocolate chip this time around and it was not up to par. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog , Christie <christie0131 wrote: > > Hi Erin > I am interested in this recipe but vegan chocolate chips seem to be few and > far between over here. Guest guest
Thanks for the information, Erin. I can't see myself ordering vegan chocolate from the US - not so sure what condition it would be in by the time it arrived over here. I'll try with some dark chocolate. Guest guest
I'm not sure that I would trust Walmart labelling. I rarely shop at Asda here (bought out by Walmart) for that reason. I have seen rice milk chocolate bars on sale from an internet shop here in the UK, but it is expensive as is the soya chocolate bar I bought have not been able to bring myself to eat. I only buy chocolate that is marked suitable for vegans, or if I have checked the ingredients list carefully. Increasingly here food items are being marked if they are vegan, which is helpful. Guest guest
Yeah, even though I can get some of these in my local grocery, they are expensive, and I'm a dark chocolate fanatic anyway, so that's the way to go! And good for you too. Thia's caution about some dark chocolates still containing dairy (why indeed?!) is a good one. Just like you would expect a package of carob chips to be vegan by default. It's got to be one of the main reasons someone would pick them up. But, alas, two varieties of those by Sunspire. Of course, my local store only carries the one with whey. -Erin www.zenpawn.com/vegblog , " christie_0131 " <christie0131 wrote: > > Thanks for the information, Erin.
