Guest guest
Hello Everyone! Newbie here! -- both to the group and to becoming a vegetarian. My fiancee and I are making quite a few lifestyle changes to become healthier. No, it's not a New Year's resolution--although it does time very well--more like he got some blood test results that are less than positive (although thankfully not dire). We both smoke (effective today: cutting back more and more each week for 3 weeks and then onto the patch!), eat waaaay too much meat and sugar, and rarely excercise. I have spent the vast majority of this weekend looking into vegetarianism, specifically having read " The Complete Idiot's Guide to Vegetarianism " cover to cover. I don't know if any of you have read it or not, but I particularly enjoyed not only the helpful tips, but also the details of exactly what it takes for your body to break down that one piece of meat. As I read it, I couldn't help but wonder how many of our other ailments might disappear once we cut meat out. It's crazy how many ailments meat causes, and all on it's own not to mention what it does after adding antibiotics and steriods and such. Lastly, we're both overweight and we've decided to get out and move more. Three big changes, but hopefully we're being realistic in our choice to make these changes gradually. For the time being, we're still meat eaters. We'll be using this time to gather information on how to be healthy vegetarians, start our walking program (10 mins a day everyday after work to start), and get a jumpstart on battling nicotine addition. My first vegetarian goal is to have gathered enough information (and local shopping resources) by the end of the week to be able to cut meat back to only one meal a day. Anyway, I appreciate being allowed to join in and I look forward to meeting everyone! TK
Guest guest
Hello and Happy New Year... I just joined myself---yesterday. And I would also recommend reading " The China Study " . That too is pretty interesting and based on all facts and reasearch--not just opinion. Seems like you are pretty convinced about your new lifestyle anyway, but that book will really seal the deal. It really is amazing how much trouble animal fats and proteins cause within the human body. I've been pretty much doing the vegetarian thing by myself, but I joined this group just for some comradery and maybe learn a thing or two (or more) along the way. Seems like there are a lot of great recipes too. Well, best of luck to you. Guest guest
Hi Kholmey! Welcome to the group! Thanks for the book recommendation. I'll see if I can find it at my local bookstore and check it out. I've been skimming thru some of the recipes on here too--I can't wait to try some of them out. It'll be a whole new way of eating for us (so much so that I had to look some food items up online to find out what they even were!) but we're looking forward to going in a different direction. Guest guest
Hi, TK! Congratulations to you and hour husband for taking steps (literally! ) to improve your health! That's great. I don't get to check these posts as often as I'd like, but health and fitness are my specialty, so if you have any questions, let me know and I'll do my best to help you out. And there are so many great people around here who can give you answers to your questions, too. Oh, and I have seen the Idiot's Guide to Vegetarianism, and it's a good resource. Anyway, welcome, and I look forward to hearing about your progress! Guest guest
The China Study is a really interesting read. As with any research, you have to take it with a grain of salt (so to speak ), but it's pretty compelling stuff. Guest guest
Hi Melody! Thank you for the offer on health and fitness help--I'm sure I'll most likely take you up on it as we go along! Our current lifestyle is of course leading us basically nowhere and we'd like to be healthy enough to actually enjoy our golden years--as opposed to filling them with Dr visits. I'll be checking out your links in your signatures too, the titles sound intriguing. TK
