Guest guest
This is a bit off topic but I have to share my little experience. I have been doing really well on the vegan plan but a few days ago...I had an intense craving for red meat. I tried to ignore it but finally gave in and had a hamburger, nothing huge and it was homemade (not fast food). I am guessing that since I am borderline anemic and haven't been taking my vits (shame on me)...that I just needed some iron (?)...anyway, my blood sugars had been running absolutely STEADY in the mid 100's (not perfect but way better than where they were). Since I ate that hamburger...my sugars jumped back up to 550 !!! They are slowly coming back down. Could just one serving of meat do that?! I don't know but no other factors have been different. I will think of this episode if I ever get the urge to jump off the veg wagon again! Stephanie
Guest guest
As an RN, you should talk to your PCP anytime you have a jump in sugars beyond your normal. I would not think meat would affect you, but any deviation from normal can alter the way your body works to metabolize unfamiliar elements. Call today. Was it lean beef or the standard ground beef? Fat can delay the absorption of carbs so if you have a mix ofhigh fat/protein and carbs you could see a delayed spike in your blood sugar some hours later. So it's probably not just the meat that cause a jump to 550, but the carbs you ate along with it that just took awhile to work through your system. Food like pizza and Chinese/Indian meals that have a combination of high fat and carbs are a real pain to eat as a diabetic. Your blood sugar might seem good an hour or two after eating but just watch out later! -- Liz ______________________________\ ____ Need Mail bonding? Guest guest
my endo is a pretty hands off doc, which is what i like about him. he knows that he can't control the diabetes, the patient has to. i basically see him for labs and Rx's. my sugars had been stable doing the low/fat free vegan diet (they were uncontrolable previously despite high doses of insulin and exercise)and the only change was the meat, now they are going back down. Guest guest
yes, i had A bun (top and bottom, if I HAD to count carbs, it would have been 2 carbs) and nothing else. i know about the fat/absorption thing too. i have been diabetic for 16 years and tried everything...low carb, no carb, ADA diet, etc...literally EVERYTHING. The only difference have I found was when I started the low/fat free vegan diet...this has been the ONLY thing that has brought my sugars down. Then, I had the burger...and they are on a roller coaster again. it's been about a week and they are leveling off again. i just really think there is something to the meat thing. Guest guest
forgot to add... while doing the low/fat free vegan thing, i have eaten lots of pasta, rice, chinese and pizza...ALL with NO ill effect immediate or delayed which is why i question the meat...BTW, it was 90% lean too. , " Stephanie " <stargazerlily72 wrote: > > yes, i had A bun (top and bottom, if I HAD to count carbs, it would > have been 2 carbs) and nothing else. i know about the fat/absorption > thing too. i have been diabetic for 16 years and tried > everything...low carb, no carb, ADA diet, etc...literally EVERYTHING. > The only difference have I found was when I started the low/fat free > vegan diet...this has been the ONLY thing that has brought my sugars > down.
