Guest guest
Hi all: Does anyone know if it is ok to just get your protein from drinks, such as whey protein mixes? I'm a little burned out on trying to make myself like tofu, beans and soy products designed to look and taste like meat (but don't!). Thanks, Sue
Guest guest
Hi Sue I'm sorry you've been having such a hard time finding something to eat that you like. I'm uncertain of your diet, although as you are proposing to take drinks with whey protein, you are obviously not vegan. There are many sources of protein besides those you mention. I rarely eat tofu and never eat other soya " meat replacement " type products. Instead I eat nuts, nut butters, lentils and beans in soups and stews, quinoa which is a grain and apparently has a lot of protein. You will get a certain amount of protein from eating any whole grains. If you eat dairy then you can get protein from cheese and yoghurt or from eggs. I think in general people who eat meat often eat far more protein than the body needs so perhaps you are trying to eat too much in the way of beans of soya products. What kinds of meals are you eating? Have you looked in the files for recipe suggestions - perhaps the time has come to be more adventurous? Stick those beans or chickpeas in a chilli or home made burger. There is such a myriad of ways to cook vegetarian food besides replacing meat with soya products or tofu in a " meat and two veg " kind of meal. Before you go down the path of getting all your protein through drinks I think you would also need to look at where you will get the other nutrients and things your body needs such as fibre. Let us know what kinds of things you like to eat and perhaps we can help you. Do check out the files though because they are packed with fabulous recipes. Guest guest
How long have you been changing to a vegetarian diet? Is it fairly new for you? I'm getting the feeling that maybe it is? I found that, as time went on, I learned more and more about exactly where I get my protein from and, like most other things, it become second-nature. I personally do not " do " protein shakes because I prefer to " eat " my food. If you eat a balanced diet, consisting of many whole foods and vary the foods, you shouldn't have a problem with protein. I think that we are taught from a young age that we need lots of protein to have a healthy diet, but that has been proven un-true over and over. Here is my suggestion: Change from " white " food items (breads, rice, pasta) to the whole wheat variety. Do you like hummus? Now that is very easy to throw together in a food processor or blender and you can make it as low fat as you want, if that is an issue for you. Use it as a dip or sandwich spread or throw a big scoop on your salad. Salads are great in this hot weather and you can toss even premade deli salads on a bed of nice greens. I like a three bean salad on my green salad. If you need to keep track of your protein intake Fitday.com has a free site that you can add everything that you eat during the day and it will at least be able to give you an approximate count on things like Calories, Fat, Fibre and Protein. Hope that helps a little. Stef Argue not with dragons, for thou art crunchy and go well with brie. All new Mail Get news delivered. Enjoy RSS feeds right on your Mail page. Guest guest
There is protein in everything you eat, just about; there are very few zero-protein foods. I don't find it a huge challenge to make certain I get enough on a vegetarian diet. I am a 43 year old female adult, and just eat the veg foods I love. I don't count protein or carbs, but if I did [and out of curiousity in the past I have done so] I found that I was getting more than half the daily amount required in one meal! The protein hype is just that... hyped up to make people fear going veg. Don't stress about it. Do a simple count by reading the nutritional values of the foods you love to eat for a few days and you will see you are probably getting plenty enough without drinking whey shakes or forcing yourself to consume meat analogs you don't like. ~ PT ~ When one begins to purposefully perform acts of kindness, the spirit changes and soon doing good deeds becomes a focal point for our life; doing good begins to be the same as feeling good.
