Guest guest
PT that is an interesting observation. We are having a huge problem with yellow jackets that swarm my cats wet food dish. Any ideas from anyone on how we can get rid of them in that area. This is the first year that we have ever had this problem and it is unnerving to the animals. We can't feed them inside because the boy cats immediately look for something to mark as soon as they enter the house. They are fixed but that hasn't prevented them from doing this unfortunately. Thanks for anyone's help with the yellow jacket problem. Loved your quote PT. Judy - ~ PT ~ Tuesday, July 24, 2007 10:42 AM Re: QOTW: Vegetarian travel tips? One thing that is so nice about the veg diet and eating outdoors is that the wasps & yellow jackets don't bother my plate; they seem to go more after the meat on other's plates! *lol* ~ PT ~ Come, heart, where hill is heaped upon hill: For there the mystic brotherhood Of sun and moon and hollow and wood And river and stream work out their will. ~ W.B. Guest guest
Heya Judy. I just posted a reply to your post over on the veg group, too. *lol* But for those that are not members at both places and might have similar issues with those pesky yellow jackets spoiling outdoor fun, I will share what limited info I have here. Back east those types of insects seemed to mostly go for sweet stuff ~ soda pop, fruits, candy, juices etc... but out here in Oregon they are total meat freaks! Once when we went to eat at a local outdoor BBQ place along the river, we noticed people sitting all around us with plates of meaty food and no yellow jackets at all. We were shocked because just down the road at our campsite we had been having an aweful time with them! We asked the waitstaff and they told us the trick of taping dryer sheets [like BOUNCE or other brands] around the dining area. For some reason it masks the scent enough of the meat to keep them away. We started using it around our campsite and it worked like a charm. Our omnivorous friends could eat in peace. As an added measure we place a decoy plate of food away from the camp to keep those bugs busy. I hope this works for you and your cats. ~ PT ~ Frame thy mind to mirth and merriment, that bars a thousand harms and lengthens life. ~ William Shakespeare ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~> , " wwjd " <jtwigg wrote: > > PT that is an interesting observation. Guest guest
Thanks PT for replying. This is interesting. Maybe I should have put out more dryer sheets. I put one above the bowl and one under the bowl and they still came in droves. I will try more. I was hoping that dryer sheet trick would work out for you and your felines. Those yellow jackets are probably just smart and figured out the trick already. I know it worked that one year when we camped. I hope you can find a good solution. Maybe you will need to set up some sort of dining tent for the cats. ~ PT ~ When we are not sure, we are alive. ~ Graham Greene
