hello gang, allison here.

i have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and i think beans are causing me

problems. something's definately making me sick, though i only THINK

its the beans. not quite sure. I suppose it could be all the fibre and

stuff.. (thoughts anyone?). the problem is- beans are in so any

vegetarian foods, from soymilk to tofu to just plain beans, which come

in a zillion varieties, and also lentils.

has anyone got any tips to help me sort out what is making me sick and

how to deal with it? are there doctors who can help you sort stuff like

this out? (just generally, not specific doctors, since i live in

Australia (unless you know australian doctors)...

thankyou everyone!

Hi Allison,

I'm pretty ignorant regarding the specifics of IBS but I do know that rinsing

all canned beans

in cold water before using dramatically reduces the amount of gas experienced by

my family.

I know this is rather simplistic, but I thought I would throw it out there

anyways! Best wishes,

Kyra

hi allison..

first of all..aussie aussie aussie! oy oy oy!

lol..i had an australian neighbor from Perthe in med school, and she

was fond of saying that..

about the beans and the IBS:

IBS is a syndrome that is mainly symptomatic and has a psychological

component,ie stress, to it. I am not sure whether your IBS diagnosis

is accurate, as beans often cause flatulence and bloating and

symptoms of indigestion. I live in the States, and we have a

medicine called Beano, which is specifically meant to combat the

indigestion and bloating caused by eating legumes, lentils, and

other gas-forming vegetables. Perhaps you may look into a similiar

medication?

Hope that helps:)

no, not at all... but i described my symptoms to a couple of doctors

and they all said 'well, it COULD be IBS'.. and i visited a lady who

specialised in finding the foods that 'upset' you, who did say i have a

sensitive stomach (which is not IBS, i know).... (yes, i'm going back

to her to find out about this whole bean thing)....

but who knows.. all i know is that something i'm eating has the power

to make me HORRIBLY cramped with diarhoea and stomach pains for the

next morning, and then leaves me with a general feeling of 'unwellness'

for the rest of the day. its really not nice, and since i suspect its

beans i'm now too terrified to eat them.

thankyou to everyone who answered by the way, so helpful :):):):)

I'm thinking you should consult a nutritionist or

a doctor specializing in gastro-intestinal disorders

before you make any drastic dietary changes.

I am sorry you are not feeling well and hope you

can get this sussed out soon. :)

No, I am not sure of anything, which is why

I suggested she seek a professional

medical opinion. :)

There are many things (some can be lethal) that can have the same symptoms

of IBS. SO I concur that seeing a dr would best to rule everything out. Just

to be safe.

I have IBS-C and have had great success with a fiber suppliment. I

know, I know, if you eat veg, you get all of the fiber you need.

Probably true more often than not. However, it seems for IBS folks it

is the amount of soluable fiber that makes the difference and many

things OK for veg may not be OK for IBS.

A friend told me about this site, I bought her organic acacia fiber

suppliment and now I get nervous when my stock gets low. It's the

only way I can exist without really embarrasing trips to the ER.

www.helpforibs.com

Her recipe board is great though I wasn't too impressed with the book.

I think you can get most of the info you need off of her site.

Good luck.
