Guest guest
Time for a new batch of questions of the week. These are posted each week to encourage sharing and for fun. What is your favorite type of vegetarian food to order out at restaurants? Have you ever tried making those dishes at home or do you just keep them as a special treat for when you dine out? Guest guest
I love Indian vegetarian dishes, especially Dal and Aloo Gobi. My wife is half Indian so she learned to make several dishes. All the members of our family can now make several Indian dishes and we enjoy them regularly at home or at our favorite restaurants. Making the dishes at home gives us opportunity to experiment with the balance and blend of ingredients to adjust flavor and texture. dw " Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. Guest guest
> What is your favorite type of vegetarian food to > order out at restaurants? We usually go to ethnic restaurants. At Tex-Mex places, I'll order veggie fajitas or chimichangas, cheese enchiladas or chile rellanos. At Indian places, I'll order chana aloo, bhindi subji, gobi aloo, aloo saag, or veggie vindaloo. At Thai places, I'll get hot red or green veggie curries (sometimes with tofu). At Vietnamese places, I get veggie noodle dishes with veggie spring rolls and summer rolls. I'm not a strict vegetarian, so I don't really worry about things like fish sauce or chicken broth. If you want to make totally sure what you are eating is vegetarian...you have to ask and hope you get a honest answer (some people consider chicken broth to be vegetarian...unfortunately). > > Have you ever tried making those dishes at home or > do you just keep them as a special treat for when > you dine out? I always try to make the dishes I like in restaurants at home. Sometimes I find I can do it better and certainly cheaper. I can also make dishes healthier by adding less oil and using more veggies (and I know for sure they don't contain animal products). I still haven't been able to get tofu dishes at home like the ones in the restaurants. The Thai places have a secret or something that I haven't figured out. ______________________________\ ____ Never miss a thing. Guest guest
We love the Mellow Mushroom Restaurants. There are many delicious vegetarian selections. Two of my very favorites are the Tempeh Hoagie and the House Pesto Pizza(I get them to add artichokes to this also). http://www.mellowmushroom.com/downloads/mushroom_menu.pdf Here is a copy of their menu. They are a chain, so there might be one in your area. I'd love to have a recipe for their Tempeh sandwich. Enjoy, Judy - ~ PT ~ Sunday, January 13, 2008 9:56 AM QOTW: Favorite restaurant dish? Guest guest
I recently tried this vegan Asian restaurant that has a buffet all day on the weekends, and when the buffet isn't up during the week after 2pm you can order something off of the menu. Well the first time was last weekend and just EVERYTHING on the buffet was SO good I filled my plate up twice! It had everything from rice to stir-fry green beans, vegetables, fruits, and mock meats, which are absolutely AWESOME! I went back again a couple nights later and ordered a mock chicken dish that was very good, too. It was served on a round bed of broccoli, rice on the side, and vegan egg roll. It tasted so much like chicken though, that I started to feel guilty because I felt like I was eating the real thing and almost felt the need to ask the waitress if it was really " mock " chicken! Also the staff is very friendly too. The place is called Pepper Tree. If anyone is in the Houston, Tx area it is located in a long business strip on Richmond inside loop 610, if you want to try it out! Guest guest
What is your favorite type of vegetarian food to order out at restaurants? One of my favorites is Pad Basil, at our local Thai Orchid restaurant here in Minnesota. And at a local Chinese restaurant, they make the BEST fried tofu, and I can never get it quite right. Have you ever tried making those dishes at home or do you just keep them as a special treat for when you dine out? I am ALWAYS trying to duplicate dishes, sometime I kinda get it, but sometimes I fail miserably too! But I always eat it! And at a local Chinese restaurant, they make the BEST fried tofu, and I can never get it quite right. It's bubbly and crispy, soft on the inside, just delectable, and I'm sure just terrible for me, but it's a treat!
