Living on a farm, I see wildlife all the time. The most fun we had recently was when our beagle treed a baby raccoon on top of our well pump house. We brought the dog in the house to give the raccoon time to escape. We routinely see deer, raccoons, coyotes, turkeys, skunks, foxes, possums, etc, etc, etc. It's fun! Guest guest
My name is Mary. I live in Chama, NM, which is near the Colorado border. (Hi, Linda, of Santa Fe!) I moved here from Florida in 2001. My, what a change! This winter, the town's one and only grocery store's roof collapsed under snow, and we were under a state of emergency. The National Guard was here helping us to shovel out. We see, on a regular or semi-regular basis, wild turkey (there are two in particular that I've grown rather fond of), red foxes, mule deer and elk. Guest guest
A belated Happy New Year to everyone! May you be safe & healthy in 2008 and beyond. ---- 03/02/08 12:26:16 ~* March 2008 Roll Call *~ It has been a few months since we have had a group roll call, so I thought it was time as we have had many new members join us recently. Please take a moment to share a bit about yourself with everyone here by participating in this roll call. If you choose not to join in it is okay, but you will have more fun if you do! 1. What is your name? Linda J Solomon, newfi4me,(I wish) 2. Where do you live now? Is it the same as where you are originally from? If different how so? [share only what you are comfortable with] I live somewhere where I am uncomfortable right now, but hope in my brain & heart that I can change this by the end of 2008. The ironic thing, is that I grew up in this area from age seven until eighteen and a half; when I left home. Living here has lasted longer than it was supposed to, but that was because of a diagnosis of MS. Now I'm afraid, because it seems the MS is getting worse and don't know if I'll make it out of here. The person whose home this is, is an emotionally negative individual and usually of little or no assistance to me with this illness. I feel very alone and reclusive here which is strange; since there is another person who resides under the same roof. And just for extra fun: 3. When was the last time you saw a wild animal and what was it? I fed the resident squirrel a little bit of bagel this morning. The one who comes to the door by the deck every so often. I love wildlife, and sign petitions often in effort to protect them; like the wolves a certain group of people are trying to kill right now. Guest guest
1. What is your name? [ username or real name or both, your choice] Answer: Cheri 2. Where do you live now? Is it the same as where you are originally from? If different how so? [share only what you are comfortable with] Answer: Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands. I was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia - Canada. My mother was born on South Moresby Island at Alliford Bay, part of the Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands archipelago. Where I live now is in the Rainforest of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia, about 90 miles out into the Pacific Ocean just south and west of Ketchikan, Alaska. Living here is very different from living in the very large, busy, and noisy city of Vancouver. I've lived here for 21 years, now. The only drawbacks here are fresh fruits and vegetables and good quality medical care, especially for seniors like my husband and me. " Fresh " produce arrives here by boat. Most of the time the produce and dairy are in good condition. It's also VERY expensive for the most part, although our little store here does a very good job obtaining quality produce and keep down the prices. During the winter months the boat can be held up by weather. When the produce does arrive it looks, well. rather bedraggled. Our growing season here is very short even with the help of greenhouses. Therefore growing fresh produce even for freezing really isn't any option. And just for extra fun: 3. When was the last time you saw a wild animal and what was it? This morning!!! There was a raccoon in our back porch enjoying our dog's food for breakfast. That was about an hour ago. We often have deer in our yard and there are black bears around the area. There aren't any cougars or anything like that here. We do have beaver, muskrats, and other smaller critters though. We also have toads, three different species that were introduced to the islands about 40 years ago. And thanks to our American neighbors we have a very health bald eagle population! (smile) Have to go to work in a few minutes. Thank you for post the " March 2008 Roll Call " . These are always fun to do and fun to read. Sincerely, Cheri Port Clements, Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands, BC - Canada

Guest guest
Hi! I'm Cheryll, and I've belonged to this group since it started :-) Mostly I just lurk now (due to lack of time), or drop in to snatch a recipe. But it's a great group. I still live in Ohio, always been here, though with this rotten weather we've been having (let alone the countless other reasons), I am beginning to wonder why... As for wild animals, I've had a very small opossum eating the seed under my birdfeeder for the past week or so now. Poor little thing, looks like just a baby, and he's cold, he shivers.... I really should try to stop in more often. I wonder if there's still anybody here that I remember, or who remembers me..?

Okanagan = hot, sunny, beautiful beaches, fruit orchards, vinyards, tourists galore Northern BC = brutally cold winters, snow galore, mosquitos galore, wilderness and wildlife galore, not so many tourists > And just for extra fun: > 3. When was the last time you saw a wild animal and what was it? I am probably more lucky than most people because over the past 10+ years in my career and field work, I have seen and often in close contact with black bears, grizzly bears, deer, moose, elk, caribou, wolves, weasels, porcupines, bobcats, lynx, martens, bighorn mountain sheep, river otters, mountain goats, fox, pika, voles, and many many bird species. Skunks, raccoons, coyotes, and seals were a fairly common sight from my days of living in Vancouver. I have yet to see a cougar or wolverine in the wild, though! Most recently, today I saw a bald eagle sitting in a tree by the road on my way to work...and I saw a moose last week, feeding by the roadside. We have pretty sweet wildlife viewing opportunities up here.

Guest guest
It's not too late to get in on this is it? My screen name is SeveralSpecies. For now I live in the western suburbs of Chicago. I'm a country boy originally from very rural north central Indiana. Oh boy is Chicago different from my little home town of 250 people! [And it's the third largest town in the county . . . very isolated . . . a drop in an ocean of corn and soybean fields.] The city people here in Chicago are very hostile; it was quite a shock at first. Heck - back home, people are nicer to strangers than their own friends and family sometimes (smile). It took me nine years to finally understand; so, the hostility doesn't bother me anymore. You see - I had an epiphany - the city people don't mean anything by their hostility. I know it's simple but that's the whole deal. I'm surprised at the amount of wildlife to be seen in the city. I've seen squirrels, rabbits, coyote, fox, deer, skunks, and lots of birds. You don't see nearly the number of animals, nor nearly as close, in the country. We have a opposum, maybe more than one, living under our deck . . . he's very welcome (I'm hoping he keeps the skunks out! Our Maltise feels compelled to chase them. And the skunks feel compelled to spray him.)

Guest guest
My name is Kathleen Jefferies and I'm rather new to the group. Enjoying the posts and especially the recipes. I live in Lafayette, CO, which is Boulder County and close to Denver. I was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in central Indiana. I've lived in several cities in Indiana, and in the Chicago area, Dallas, Philly area (Chester County), Northern NJ, Huntington Beach, CA (Orange County, just south of LA) and now here. Moved here because both my kids (and a granddaughter) live here. My yard backs up to open space and horse farms. I see a lot of rabbits, prairie dogs, and Freddy the Fox lives behind me. I don't usually see the coyotes, but I hear them howling at night. Kathleen Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man.
