Guest guest
Yes, and I am in one now, have been for some time except occasionally. Haven't been inspired yet. LOL Although the experiments with the tofu freezing, and boiling thing has end up with enticing me to try using it differently. linda " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll > > Have you ever found yourself in a cooking rut, serving and > eating the same ol' things over and over? Guest guest
> Have you ever found yourself in a cooking rut, serving and > eating the same ol' things over and over? How did you manage > to get inspired again? YES! This happens to me quite often. Usually it is due to feeling too tired to cook or plan meals so i go the path of least resistance and make the " fab five " over and over. What are the fab five, you ask? *lol* Pizza, tacos, spaghetti, chili, and chef salads! > Please share meal planning tips, recipe ideas, or any thing > you have found helpful in shaking the food blahs. Reading the files here and taking time out each month to plan ahead helps. When i am not being too lazy i like to get several cookbooks out and spend an hour jotting down recipes [page numbers and ingredients for the shopping list], and i plan a rough draft of monthly meals with at least one new recipe a week from my " must-try-soon " list. But lately i am less together and more lazy, so i am really hoping some of your ideas will help inspire me. ~ pt ~ To have ideas is to gather flowers; to think is to weave them into garlands. ~ Swetchine

Also, I'm such a spicy food fiend, that most things end up being Mexican in style. > Please share meal planning tips, recipe ideas, or any thing > you have found helpful in shaking the food blahs. Grab something new in the produce section even if I have no idea what I'm going to do with it. The latest examples for me were beets, daikon radish, and orange cauliflower. -Erin
Guest guest
Living on my own I find that I can get into cooking ruts that last for years - for example I ate the same menu for lunch on working days for 5 years until last autumn when PT invited me to join the group. Since then I have a huge pile of cookbooks in my living room which I flick through for ideas. Mostly it is the photographs that inspire me so I'm a sucker for cookbooks with loads of photos and I don't cook much from others. Inviting someone round for a meal can inspire me to try something different as well. I assume they won't necessarily be happy with my usual fare and I make more of an effort. So perhaps the answer for me is to have dinner guests on a weekly basis. Guest guest
I try to cook on Sundays so I have some food to last for the first few days on the week and then I keep stuff like canned refried beans, tomatoes, tortillas and veg. burgers so I can make some fast dinner meals. I was in the rut when I wasn't vegetarian. I ate fast food stuff and then I was hungry 2 hours later and it was boring to me. I printed some recipe from this group and I have a bunch from the other group to try, I have cooked alot of those already and they were all good. I like the loaf recipes because I can also use the loaf for soft tacos. Guest guest
Hospitality is a great motivation. Guest guest
Well, I wish I had some sort of tip. I guess I can show how weird I can be if that helps. If I'm wanting something new to fix/eat then I want it new to me too. I have plenty of cookbooks. I have a small binder with printed out recipes. In our recipes section, we have tons of recipes shared by thousands of people over several years (not to mention the great groups and recipes that have sprouted from TheFeralVegetarian). For some reason, though, I want a recipe from some person here. It doesn't matter if they've just made it, dug it out from the files or tried it a decade ago. So long as they've brought it up it just feels newer and fresher. I especially like it, if it comes from someone who does not post very many recipes because I feel like it must be pretty darn good if they've mentioned it. S. Guest guest
Oh yes, I just started this recipe folder idea. I think it was either PT or Amy that mentioned it (my apologies if I'm giving credit to the wrong peeps). I've had it going for a few weeks now. I think keeping with it will build up the stand-by recipes ideas which will inevitably as it grows make them less stand by and more of a vast rotating variety. I do have a few queued up in the try next folder. This is one of the best ideas as I think most of us come across something we'd really like to try and then forget it a week later (or is this only me!). Now they are stored in a more reliable type of memory. Oh and I just read Erin's great idea on grabbing a new ingredient at the store and working around that as something new to try. Guest guest
Try a juice or water fast for a week to ten days. (Look for books by Dr. Paavo Aerola [sp?] on how to fast safely and effectively) That'll get you out of about any rut you're in!! ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: The question of the week [QOTW] for April 6-12, 2008: Have you ever found yourself in a cooking rut, serving and eating the same ol' things over and over? Guest guest
Hi All, How do I get out of a food rut? When I'm stuck, I like to read new cookbooks and talk to other vegetarians for recipes to try. Or, I might look at an old favorite and think " how can I adapt this recipe?
