Guest guest
Time for a new group of questions of the week. Earth Day is coming up on our April calendar. April 22nd, 2008! I thought it might be fun for us to share a bit with Earth Day eco-green inspired thoughts. 1. How do you celebrate Earth Day every day? 2. Do you do anything special on Earth Day? 3. Does your local community have any Earth Day events that you think sound fun or unique? 4. Share a link to a website or a url that you feel gives good ideas for ways to celebrate Earth Day and can help us be more environmentally conscious. Guest guest
What do I do every day to celebrate earth day? I walk bicycle or bus to work, shopping and everywhere. I do NOT own a motor vehicle. I talk to my elected reps often about what I want to see. I buy locally raised and processed food as much as possible. I will be going on the 100mile diet next month. I use my bathwater to flush my toilet and to water my garden. I save my rainwater. I grow my own vegetables, and am in the process of putting in a food forest. I plant local ornamentals in my garden to attract local beneficial insects and birds. I have a water feature in my yard to attract local wildlife. I do not travel by plane.I re-use glass jars from pickles etc. instead of plastic wrap or tupperware. I do not have a tv. I check to see if the news about climate change is accurate or if it's based on the fact that multinational petro-chemical companies spend their ad dollars on the media and therefore own them. I dumpster dive[ our society wastes tons of re-useable stuff daily]. I compost both my own wastes and that of others. I use my urine as a fertilizer instead of polluting our drinking waters with it. I do not use body chemicals[ almost all of them contain toxins]. I line dry my clothing in summer. these are some of the things I do. I do nothing special on earth day. to me it is a day for those who pollute regularly to feel good about themselves without actually changing their wasteful habits. My city has nothing special on. Guest guest
Wow Tim, you are really doing a lot for the environment and to help save mother earth!!! I am a senior citizen living in a small condo and I am not able to do a whole lot, but I do try to do what I can...I am no where near as " Green " as you are, but here are some of the things I do to help: I am vegan (for the most part) and belong to online animal and human rights groups, environmental and green groups, such as " Sierra Insiders Club. " I am an (online) activist and sign many online petitions etc. to my/our reps, etc. as a way of doing my part to help the environment, and all the human and non-human creatures who deserve to live a good and decent life on this planet. http://www.sierraclub.org/inside/ I am learning to bring my own bags when I shop. I must admit that I sometimes forget (but I'm getting better)...I often use homemade non-toxic cleaners, such as vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice, and salt...I try not to use many paper towels (I use cloth towels for cleaning most of the time)...I never run my dishwasher unless it is full...I generally either walk or ride with neighbors in my senior community to get around... I rarely turn on more than one light in my house at a time and use energy saving light bulbs...In the winter I turn my thermostat down very low and wear a sweater to keep warm...In the summer I rarely turn on my cooling unit, except for very short periods...When it gets very hot, I do a load of wash and wear my (damp-dry) clothes until they are dry, then hang them up.-- No need to use the dryer, plus it keeps me cool all day. I also use an indoor drying rack (I am not able to dry my clothes outside since I live in a condo)...Although I have limited space, I grow a few veggies, and my 2 little chi dogs help me fertilize the plants and bushes (but not my vegetables,lol)...I sometimes save rainwater to water my plants that need it. I try to avoid poisons and other toxic chemicals whenever possible, (but unfortunately, I have little or no say about what is done in the common areas, here in my complex)...I separate and recycle trash (as do most of us in my community)...I live alone and do not flush the toilet any more often than I feel it necessary. When I take a bath I do not fill the tub up any more than half way (sometimes less)...I am going to try some of your ideas, such as using my bath water to flush my toilet and water my garden. I do not plan to do anything special on Earth Day, but I do what little I can every day, which is far more important...I believe we owe it not only to our children and grandchildren, but to all the future generations of animal and plant life, to do the best we can to help curb pollution and protect the environment so that mother earth can hopefully begin to recover from all the damage that we have done thus far. Guest guest
I don't feel like I do enough, but I try...a little bit is better than nothing. I have made my own cleaners for many years now. Lately, " Earth friendlier " products (like laundry detergent, cleaners, dishwasher detergent, etc...) have become more affordable. I have vowed to switch to those products. I buy organic foods when possible. I use compact florescent light bulbs when possible. Recently, my son and I went through the house and unplugged things we don't use everyday....the stereo, the hubby's Marshall amp stack, etc... We recycle items the garbage co. will pick up curbside...glass, #1 and #2 plastic, aluminum, and newspapers. I donate clothes and household items we no longer want or need to Goodwill or Am-Vets. I try to use natural/organic personal care products. If I ever get a six pack with those pastic rings, I cut them so little critters don't get stuck in them. I try to compost. I've been trying to take a " 2 song " long shower. We drive smaller, fuel efficient cars (although we don't have hybrids). I try to drive as little as possible and combine errands. I'm a preschool/pre-Kindergartten teacher and I established a recycling program at school...although noone uses it...i often dig things out of the trash to put in the recycling bins. the Kindergarten teacher and I use scrap paper for all kinds of things and we are starting a compost pile at the school. We are planning a big Earth Day lesson. I have my class trained to turn off the lights and we often spend class time without the lights on....we use natural sunlight. We have never done any Earth Day events, but this year my son wants to go to the local Earth Day celebration at a local park on the Rappahannock River. I guess we will do that. :0 Sorry for rambling (I'm avoiding actual work ), susie --- ~ PT ~ <patchouli_troll wrote: > Time for a new group of questions of the week. > > Earth Day is coming up on our April calendar. Guest guest
All those things are wonderful; good for you and our planet. I don't share your view about Earth Day though. I don't think it is just a day for people who pollute regularly to feel good about themselves. I look at it more as a day people like you, and others that live more eco-friendly lives, can help educate others on ways they can become better earthlings. I think some people who do a lot to help the environment can become resentful towards others who they feel are not doing as much or enough for the environment. Some vegetarians get that attitude towards omnivores, too. Instead of that, those of us that do more should adopt a compassionate view towards others and seek ways to help educate others in a nonjudgemental manner of peace and hope towards making this planet a better place. I think I could learn much from someone like you. I wish our area had a special Earth Day event with people showing how they live; eco-friendly tips and ideas in action. ~ PT ~ To me God is truth and love, God is ethics and morality, God is fearlessness. ~ Mohandas Karamchand [Mahatma] Gandhi (1869-1948) ~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~> , tim jeffrey <timothydj wrote: > I do nothing special on earth day. to me it is a day for those who pollute regularly to feel good about themselves without actually changing their wasteful habits. > My city has nothing special on. > Tim
Guest guest
Well said PT! When people question my lifestyle, I use that as an opportunity to educate, but not lecture. People are more apt to listen if they do not feel like they are receiving a lecture. tc , " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll wrote: > > All those things are wonderful; good for you and > our planet. > I don't share your view about Earth Day though. > I don't think it is just a day for people who pollute > regularly to feel good about themselves. Guest guest
I understand all that. I am however disgusted with having to ingest all the toxins that most of our society considers it their " right " to spew into the atmosphere. I also find that way too many people say they are doing something, or plan to do something without it ever actually affecting their reality. In my province our elected representatives talk green, but are allowing clearcutting of forests in our provincial parks. Trees sequester carbon- they are our best hope of surviving- YES surviving- global warming as a species. I think our " civilization " has already committed suicide, and now we are just waiting for the body to stop twitching. SO, at what point do we decide it is ok to get angry with those who insist on their " right " to do whatever they want, even though their pollution and wastefulness are causing human deaths and the extinction of species? WE, as a species are horrendous disgusting murderers, and it is time the excuses were not accepted. Tim
Guest guest
I've been educating for the last 48 years. At what point does one say " enough excuses, get with the program or else " ? HUMAN beings are dying by the hundreds of thousands due to global warming, and yet it is still " ok " to drive a Hummer. Is it ok to kill someone if you don't do it with your own hands? At what point will their pollution kill off the species which allows our species to survive? When that happens, will it be ok to be angry? I am angry because these people are killing unthinkingly and refusing to listen to what they are doing and how to stop it. It is getting TOO LATE to bother educating them. Pretty soon we'll have to defend ourselves from them while they try to steal our food. If 2 people are in a boat in the middle of the ocean and one insists on putting a hole in the boat, and on ignoring the others protests, at what point is it ok for the other to get angry and start defending themself?? Guest guest
Tim, I understand your frustration but " making " people do things requires " force " and ultimately " guns " . No matter how frustrating, we have to have buy-in and global ownership of this problem. This will require continuing education effort along with freedom to research, debate and problem solve. Find a way to make global warming cessation economically viable and people will commit to it in huge numbers. People need to make money to pay the mortgage so they sell Hummers. People that made the mistake of buying Hummers cannot sell them for what they bought them for so are still making payments so that's what they drive. We all HAVE to work to make payments and pay taxes to fund the military... ok, you see where I am going. I feel your pain. Guest guest
I don't Celebrate Earth Day. We always used to have arbor day. We still do. This is what I observe. It is the third week in April in New Jersey. On arbor day, the custom is to plant a tree. It is that simple. We understand that when we plant a tree, we are giving a gift to a future generation. We cultivate a peaceful and beatiful society, and conserve the Earth for them. This is communicated sybolically by the planting of a tree. This symbolism goes back to ancient times. Consider the first Psalm. Likewise, nature and honoring the earth traditionallly played an important role in religious celebrations, above all in Christianity at Easter, Pentecost and Christmas and in the Jewish faith at Shavuout and Sukkoth. Here bringing plants and trees into the home- or in other cases going out and sitting under them . Nature was part of life for these generations, and by course, they way, means and (though perhaps subtly) the reason for their celebrations. Earth Day on the other hand is a false holiday, made up to sound the alarm to people who are a hundred years out of touch with the rythms of nature. I do wholeheartely praise the advocacy side of Earth Day. I also admire very much the " Hammer Out a Warning " spirit of the day, wich celebrates the era and ethos out of wich it sprung and draws attention to a cause of all the most urgent. However, today, Earth Day has become comercialized. It is an advertizing oppurtunity for anyone and everyone who thinks a small step in the right direction is an excuse to toot their own horn. The issues are more complex than simply buying one product over another. For example, you have likely seen the " tomatoe mojo " adds run in magazines this spring by miracle grow. They feature a lay out designed to appeal to a 20's something demographic. Among tiles of red color block, and abstract juxtoposition (ex: a ceramic monkey wearing a fez) dance in a tomato garden a handsome wild hair young man, and in the background his hippyesque girlfriend in a kircheif and jeans. Of course, Earth Day is a good day to think about growing our own food. I can't reccomend this strenously enough. Everyone can grow _something_. However, should we likewise go out and buy chemical fertilizers, to pollute that food, and the water ways in areas of human housing developement? Our choices and our purchasing power can absolutly make a difference on Earth Day and all year. We have a powerful voice. Ultimately though, we know what we should do in regards to our personal decisions to help the Earth. This usually doesn't involve _buying_ anything. Eat organic, eat local, grow organic, go vegetarian. Instead of Earth Day this year, celebrate Pentecost. On Pentecost, or Pfingsten, as we called it, it is the custom to decorate the house and doorways with flowers and fresh green branches. Traditionally it is birch branches which are hung all around, and shilf (Calamus - an iris like plant) leaves that cover the tables and sideboards, but whatever you are pruning (especially something invasive) will do nicely. We honor nature by bringing it into our homes Likewise, it is cutom to eat fresh cheese and honey on this day - which sounds good to most vegetarians. It is still celebrated this way throughout Central & Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. (If you aren't familiar with the church festival, you will recognize it as the day cows process through town with floral wreaths around their necks (can we derive a veg. message here???) and when the Maypole is danced in many places) This year, Pentecost falls on May 11. Enjoy, and remember that every day is Earth Day! Sincerely, Matt Di Clemente Brick, New Jersey **************Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos.
