Guest guest
Not sure yet what I am doing for the 4th, however when I go to Chicago for my family picnic I will be making my red bean and spinach burgers and not sure what other burger yet as I am still working on the other recipes. When I go to my cousins BBQ end of July beginning of August I usually make my Kicked Up Salsa dancing Macaroni Salad. Gayle **************Gas prices getting you down? Guest guest
> 1. What are your plans for this week's holiday? I don't have any real set plans right now, but we will probably have a BBQ picnic dinner that day for sure! > 2. What is your favorite menu for outdoor dining? Wine & beer & some other beverage [non-alcoholic] like iced tea or lemonade. Fresh fruits & veggies Salad -macaroni, potato or otherwise Veggie stuffs- veggie dawgs, kabobs, or vegburgs Chips & salsa Pie & ice cream for dessert > 3. Are you a veggie dog or a veggie burger person or neither? > [share your favorite brand or recipe or alternatives] I want one of each! I like Yves big dawgs because they fill the bun nicely. I like gardenburger brand of vegburg. > 4. What are your favorite picnic salads, desserts, and snacks? I love my Sweet Potato Potato Salad for a potato salad and for macaroni salad I love my recipe called Northern-style Mac Salad. But if I am going to a party where the peeps are not vegetarian, I will take along a big bowl of my Cold Chic Macaroni Salad, and then I will have that as my main dish if they don't have much other vegstuff to eat. I don't make pie in the summer because it is too damn hot to bake, but thank goddess for the store bakery! [laughs] Just buy some ice cream and dessert is a done deal. For snacking at a picnic you can't beat dill pickles and chips with salsa. I like cut fruit and veggies with dips too. -Gaia

Guest guest
Sadly we have no holiday here in Scotland until the middle of September - even later in some parts of the country as the autumn holiday varies from region to region. Even more sadly, summer seems to be passing us by again this year so I can't see myself eating al fresco either! However I shall fire up my George Foreman grill and pretend! I like both vegeburgers and vegebangers. Since I adopted a vegan diet I've found very few commercially produced vegeburgers that are suitable, so I make my own. My most favourite ever vegeburger was a mushroom and nut concoction which I devised using what was leftover after making a mushroom stock, mixed together with some ground pecans and wheatgerm, amongst other things - one of those never-to-be-repeated experiments that you wish you had written down at the time! My favourite commercially produced vegebangers are Taifun Tofu Grill Herb Sausages - actually I have really enjoyed any of the Taifun tofu products. However I imagine that they are only available in Europe as they are made in Germany. Christie (overcast in Edinburgh)

QOTW for June 29th - July 5th, 2008: With the US holiday of the 4th of July coming up this week, it brings to mind backyard BBQs, picnics, and fun sharing food outdoors. 1. What are your plans for this week's holiday? For the first time in years I am not having a cook out. It would have been my first as a vegan. This year we are headed to King's Island Amusement Park. They have so much to do there this holiday and will end with a huge fireworks display. So, we are going to enjoy some of the park food that is vegan friendly. We will probably pack some light menu items just in case the cuisine is not up to par in the car. 2. What is your favorite menu for outdoor dining? This I have not done yet as a new veg*n. My family knows that I no longer eat meat or animal products. I am the known as the griller, so it would change as far as meat prep. But my menu would like this. BBQ tofu Vegetable Shiskebobs (sp) Vegan Baked Beans Grilled Corn on the Cobb Veggie burgers/dogs Party Punch 3. Are you a veggie dog or a veggie burger person or neither? I am not really into veggie dogs or burgers. But it is nice to have once in a while. I have missed them since going veg. When I first tried them, they were awful. That was because I was a very new veg and was still used to meat and its texture. The longer that I stay away from it, the more accepting I am of the newer taste and texture. I really like Smart Dogs, Tofurkey, and the Boca burger brands. 4. What are your favorite picnic salads, desserts, and snacks? Grilled peaches and plums Potato Salad Brownies and Cupcakes
