Guest guest
Time for a set of questions of the week. QOTW for August 17th-23rd, 2008: 1. Have you recently tried any new foods? [maybe a heirloom vegetable, an interesting ethnic dish, or a new vegetarian product] 2. Is there a dish you want to try, but haven't yet? Guest guest
Yes, we have recently tried quinoa and we love it. We have it a variety of ways, and it's delicious every time. We like it with peppers, onions, garlic, and also with other vegetables, whatever we have on hand at the time. We read that it is supposed to be really excellent for you. We are pretty new to tempeh, too. After it's been marinated overnight in the fridge, my hubby bakes it, then cubes it and we add it to our salad. Very good! We have had it as a main dish, too. I sliced it thinly for salads like I would with radishes, as was suggested by my food encyclopedia. It was quite good, tasting a bit like a milder, sweeter broccoli stem. Apparently it is a very hardy plant and easy to grow, so I think I'll be planting some in my newly purchased (with house) garden. > 2. Is there a dish you want to try, but haven't yet? Hmmmm, I'm a pretty adventurous vegetarian cook and I am always trying new recipes and dishes. One particular dish that I have been eyeing for many, many years is a kugel, which makes regular appearances in the Moosewood collection of cookbooks. Do we have any regular kugel makers or fans here, and would it make a good potluck dish? I always like to enlighten my fellow coworkers in the office with unusual vegetarian dishes from other cultures. Might be time to try a few kugel recipes! Guest guest
Yesterday when I went on a little road trip to Austin I ate at a nice little vegetarian/vegan cafe called Mother's. I had their TLT, which is a marinated tempeh burger with nayonaisse, guacamole, lettuce, etc and it was FABULOUS!! Also the salad I had with it had cashew-tamari dressing on it, which I had never had before and it was REALLY good. I'm told you can get it at Whole Foods, so next time I go there I'm going to look for that; I'm curious to try it on my spinach salad. As far as dishes I haven't tried yet, I'd like to try vegan cheesecake sometime. I tried to make one once but it didn't work out; I didn't let it cool at room temp before I put it in the fridge, so I think that might have had something to do with it. I know there are some recipes for it in the files section of this site, but just haven't gotten around to trying one of them yet. I think I'm still a little discouraged because the one time I tried it turned out looking really bad. Also I loved sloppy joes during my meat-eating days and I have a recipe for the vegan version of them. So I think I'll make them for dinner tonight and if you like I'll let you all know how they turn out. 4streegrrl <treegrrl29 wrote: , " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll wrote: > 1. Guest guest
This is a good question because I just tried those chilis in adobo sauce about a month ago. They are so good! I am using them in everything lately. I have a really good recipe to post that I found online and tried. I am always searching for other ways to use this perfect canned food. Has anyone here got good recipes for using them? Oh and has anyone here tried stirring some of that adobo sauce into mayo? Yeowzah! So good on a veggie wrap! Next thing I want to try is some good curry. I know there is a name for the stuff they put in it, like a special powder spice blend, but I can't think of the name right now. Starts with an 'G' I think. , " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll wrote: > > Time for a set of questions of the week. > > QOTW for August 17th-23rd, 2008: > > 1. Is there a dish you want to try, but haven't yet? I can't think of one in particular, but I would like to try some African dishes.

Guest guest
Aw yeah, that is the stuff I was thinking of. I haven't found any yet, but I can find a lot of spices at stores that carry them in bulk. Does anyone here have a recipe to make your own garam masala that is easy? I am okay in the kitchen, but I am no Emril Lugasse! ha Thanks for thinking of the spice stuff name for me Leslie. , " leslie " <onlyoneme wrote: > > I think what you are looking for is garam masala. > hth, > Leslie > - > Next thing I want to try is some good curry.
