The only kind I find are the instant. In Hawaii, we eat a lot of white sticky rice! One popular brand here is in a yellow bag, named " Hinode " it says calrose rice on the bag... it is very different from the instant kind...I use both, depending on the meal I am making! Guest guest
I like rice, but have to limit the starches we serve due to husband's diabetes. My favorite is coconut rice--long grain cooked with coconut milk and water, possibly with sauteed onions, garlic, and Chinese five spice powder. I can eat basmati rice all day, and I love risi e bisi, though my husband's very nontraditional touch is to add peanut butter to the broth, say, about one sixth cup, to the three or four cups of vegetable broth. I dislike the rice " medley " brands, since the brown rice is still tough, the white rice is mushy, and the wild rice just can't rescue the situation. The only thing worse than medley rice is Minute Rice. We end up eating rice twice a week, barley occasionally, and pasta twice a week. Potatoes tend to occur less than once a week, except for mashed potato flakes, fixed without butter or milk due to daughter's lactose intolerance....between her vegetarian status and the dietary limits, we eat lots and lots of beans. Which reminds me, I have a pound of large limas soaked and ready to cook tonight. First time I'll serve it with onions, next time with tomatoes and carrots, both times with a green salad and feta cheese on the side.
