Sorry I haven’t e-mailed lately and also sorry that this will be a long e-mail

and a bit of a downer.

In the first week of December, our eldest grandson and his fiancée were in a

terrible car accident about a block away from his home. Susan died instantly.

Jon had stopped at the stop sign but didn't see a semi coming. Since then we've

gone to the site at the same time and the sun would have been right in his eyes.

A semi, travelling (supposedly) 45 miles an hour T boned Jon's Ford Ranger, spun

it and pushed the Ranger (side ways) 100 yards down the road before stopping.

(45 mph my fat backside.) Thankfully, the semi driver is ok.

They didn't air lift him to the hospital, but sent him to the hospital rescue

squad. The ER doc said they figured he'd be DOA.

He coded in the ER. It was almost 5 hours before the ER doc came out to the

waiting room to talk to us, his maternal grandfather, his boss, wife, owner of

the fish farm where Jon works and his wife. The doctor was on an adrenalin high

and couldn't stop talking how surprised he was that Jon was still alive. They

hadn’t cleaned up the ER before bringing us in and it was easy to see just why

he has been given a total of 11 units of blood so far.

If I remember it all, he has bleeding on brain, broken scapula, compound

fracture upper right arm, 3 breaks in the upper right leg, 3 broken ribs,

collapsed right lung, several lacerations on his liver, ruptured diaphragm, all

abdominal organs shoved upwards, unable to breathe on his own, mouthful of

broken teeth, right side of his face nothing but a bleeding mess and probably

more things, but those are what stayed in my mind. They put him into a drug coma

because otherwise the pain would have been unbearable. The ER doctor said he

hoped Jon would hold on long enough for his parents to get here from Washington

State (father, our son) and Australia (his mom).

Once he was stable enough to go upstairs, he coded again when they got him in

SICU.

The first round of surgery was preformed by a heart surgeon; oddly enough the

same one who did my husband's quadruple heart bypass and 3 other surgeons,

orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeon. The heart surgeon put his diaphragm back

where it belonged and the ortho docs put a rod in his leg and arm while another

surgeon was doing I don’t know what. It had to have been an incredibly crowded

operating room between doctors, nurses, OR techs and a lot of angels.

Second round of surgery was several days later when they took him to the OR to

do a tracheotomy, a feeding tube and I don't remember.

Third round of surgery was this past Wednesday. Somehow the feeding tube in his

stomach got pulled half way out and he had a gallon plus of feedings in his

belly. Peritonitis has already set in.

The infectious disease doc says the infection in his chest is pseudomonas. Not

good. I nursed a young child with pseudomonas following severe burns and when I

smelled it coming from our grandson’s chest tube I had to leave the surgical

intensive care unit before loosing it.

He's still in a coma and his pupils are blown but everyone is doing the “Oh he

is doing great†bologna. I believe that somewhere in his mind, Jon knows that

he beloved is gone and isn’t going to try to come back to us. They were

incredibly close and brought out the best in one another.

The officer and DA for the county he lives in discussed things and the DA said

he would not be charged, due to the fact that neither of them had drugs nor

alcohol in their systems and Jon and Susan were in a long term relationship (3

years). Neither of the kids had ANY alcohol or drugs in their blood. Their

drink of choice was Mountain Dew or iced tea.

But the judge in the county has over ruled the DA and is charging our grandson

with homicide. Supposedly they were not wearing their seat belts, which is why

they were flung from the truck. It is not yet the law for seat belts to be used

in trucks, but that is getting changed soon. Both of the kids were extremely

cautious drivers. You know the ones who go 5 mph under the speed limit and drive

you crazy when they are going 50 and everyone else is going 65?

Our precious girl’s parents are livid with the judge and have been at the

hospital with us a number of times. The flags and orange spray paint outlines of

Jon and Susan are still on the road, which her parents and the other grandfather

have to pass daily on the way to work. They even have the spot where Susan's dog

died marked in orange paint.

Our son was able to come here for 2 weeks but had to go back as when the Air

Force tells you to get back to work, you get back to work. Our precious daughter

in love had to go back Thursday. (They were divorced but Carl and I didn't

divorce her as our daughter in love). Her flight home took 25 hours then another

hour plus to get from the airport to her home.

Would you believe they STILL have not run an EEG? I don't understand it. Maybe

the fact that the kid is still covered under his dad's Tricare (military)

insurance is why.

Hope I’m making sense. Jon is still in the surgical intensive care unit and

we’re spending most of our time there, running home during shift change to let

the dogs out and feed the animals, shower and change and run back.

I can't help but remember that Jonathan was born in that hospital, 20 years ago

on August 3, 20 years ago.

Heading off to bed. Love to all, Jeanne

Jeanne,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family during this time.

I pray that Jon will make a full recovery and they drop the stupid

charges against him. Please let us know how Jon is doing every now

and then.

Healing hugs and prayers,
