Opps! This is not vegetarian. Marshmallows and Jello

both have gelatin. Yuck! I'm gonna go ahead and

remove this post from the archives.

Sorry about that. I did know that marshmallows and Jello both contain

gelatin - didn't realize that things posted here need to be also meet

vegan requirements. Does that mean that recipes posted should not

contain eggs, cheese, milk, etc. also?

Thanks!

No, recipes do NOT need to be vegan only.

This group is for vegetarians, so recipes can

be lacto-ovo vegetarian [containing dairy/eggs].

Honey is also okay.... any ingredient that is vegetarian.

Geletin is not either vegan or lacto-ovo vegetarian

safe since it is made from dead animals.

Hope this clears the confusion up. We appreciate

your sharing so please continue, and if you have

any ingredient questions you can feel free to email

me. Thanks again. :)

Gelatin is in many things that you would not normally think of. Here

is a link to an eye-opening article about gelatin, that I am sure will

help many of us eliminate these gelatin-containing foods from our diet.

" Veganism is a way of living which excludes all forms

of exploitation of, and cruelty to, the animal kingdom, and includes a

reverence for life. It applies to the practice of living on the

products of the plant kingdom to the exclusion of flesh, fish, fowl,

eggs, honey, animal milk and its derivatives, and encourages the use of

alternatives for all commodities derived wholly or in part from animals.

....

Any definition

of veganism would talk about not exploiting animals, and honeybees (Apis

mellifera) are, without a doubt, animals. "

It is considered the exploitation and enslavement of bees. However if you

look at various and sundry web pages there seems to be some disagreement

as to whether or not the use of honey is or is not appropriate for vegans.

I believe the same applies to silk.

I'm not vegan, just ovo-lacto vegetarian. I do eat honey. I don't use silk

but haven't really felt any urge or any reason to use silk.

  • 2 weeks later...

If it helps anyone, I've read you can try substituting agar-agar,

arrowroot, guar gum, carrageenan, or pectin for gelatin. Also, there

are vegan marshmallows from a brand called " Sweet & Sara " ; not easy to

find, but you can order them online.
