Guest guest
Can you guys give me some ideas of what you eat in a typical day? I'm also wondering if you guys have suggestions for eating raw on a budget. Most of the recipes I'm finding call for almonds, which are hideously expensive or walnuts, which my daughters and I find bitter. Thanks, Becky
Guest guest
I definitely agree with this....get most of your calories from fruit, and don't eat too many nuts. I generally just pack fruit to work, and eat it throughout the day. So you have a wide variety here: melons, apples, oranges, bananas, mangoes, ALL the rest. BUT, you do not have to eat all of these on a given day! Usually I eat only two different fruits, say apples and bananas, or melons and oranges, etc...they say the body prefers having less variety as this makes it easier to digest. So I also only eat one at a time...say juicier fruit in the earlier hours and drier fruit (like bananas) in the afternoon. You'll figure out how many of each you need given a few days of trying...I usually have the equivalent of 3 apples and 3 bananas - I am 6'5 " 190 lbs, if that helps. Then for dinner it is usually a large salad, and of course you can be as simple or creative as you want here, but I find the simpler salads a lot easier to make and more tasty. If I want more then I usually have a delicious avocado sandwich or 2 (want a recipe?) or some steamed veggies with organic brown rice, seasoned however you want - I use tons of raw garlic and ginger, and a few dashes of Bragg's Amino's. That really should be enough food for me, but sometimes I will have a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon and organic maple syrup or honey a couple of hours later - but this is usually just bored-overeating on my part I think, plus it is not good to eat too close to bedtime. Guest guest
Thanks guys. Looking at all the recipes and things online this seemed like a very complicated and time-consuming lifestyle. Now it does seem easier. I think it was all the sprouting things that was scaring me so much. :-) Becky rawfood , " Joe Postma " <joepostma wrote: > > I definitely agree with this....get most of your calories from fruit, > and don't eat too many nuts. > > I generally just pack fruit to work, and eat it throughout the day. > So you have a wide variety here: melons, apples, oranges, bananas, > mangoes, ALL the rest. Guest guest
Rebecca, I'm on a fixed income and need to budget wisely. I also have let go of a tremendous amount of weight this past year along with athsma, joint aches & pains, allergies etc. The secret - Natural low fat style (think 80/10/10) Raw Vegan living! I had to learn how to embrace fruits especially bananas and the occasional dates in order to keep my budget under control. I use my xtra food budget money or food stamps to add those nice extras to my normal/staple items that I find I need to keep available. Every week and a half I buy 1 case of organic bananas & 1/2 a case of organic vine ripened tomatoes (or plum/grape if vine ones are out of season). Those are the major staples that I find I need to purchase. Then to go with it I buy 2-3 heads of celery, a few dates (I'll eat too many if I keep them around), and other fruits & /or peppers & zucchini/cucumbers. I buy my lettuces every other day or so - I live in NYC, that part is easy for me to go pick up. My typical day starts with either 3-4 bananas plain OR a 2-3 banana & 1 other fruit or celery or lettuce smoothie - when I'm in the mood for a cold one I add a few ice cubes to the blender mug. The next time I eat - often on a consulting job - I take 4 bananas with me or 4 dates & often some celery washed & cut up, Sometimes I make an extra smoothie in the morning using 4 bananas and lots of really green lettuce & put it into 2 bottles that fit into my mesh pockets on my bag - the color doesn't turn people off so badly, they stay cool enough to get through a couple hours and I can just drink that meal & rinse the containers out to use again. The last meal of the day - typically I make a 2-3 banana smoothie w/lettuce to drink while I prepare a salad or a BIG bowl (were talking 3-4 cups) of my fav diced tomatoes, celery & cucumbers/peppers or whatever or my famous zucchini pasta w/tomato sauce (tom, sundried toms, celery, 2 basil leaves, chives) If I'm still wanting something later - which happens a couple times a month, I will make a cold banana smoothie w/3 bananas 2 dates & 1/4 teaspoon of raw organice carob powder and 4-5 small ice cubes! yum. I also find that about 1ce every couple months I might feel a bit left out in the world and I allow myself to have some very lightly steamed broccolli - that helps me to feel more 'normal' in the world. Hope this is helpful as well. I like hearing how other people manuver thier raw days too. It helps me to gain perpective and be more gentle with myself.
