I recently spoke to a dietician about my raw food tendencies. No surprise, she

was skeptical.

Anyway, she brought to my attention to this book called " Health Food Junkies "

about what

the authors, Steven Bratman and David Knight, call 'orthorexia nervosa': the

obsession with

health food. One of the authors says he used to have it, what he calls this

eating disorder. He

used to be on raw foods and other health diets. Anyway, has anyone here read

this book? I'm

getting my library to find me a copy. I'm curious what he says. If you've read

it, what did you

think?

It is interesting that a healthy lifestyle is considered a disorder. Unless

we are behaving according to mainstream norms, we are considered to be

health freaks and now to have a disorder. I'm used to being called a health

freak (among other things LOL!!!) because my daughter and I eat healthy

foods, get adjusted, use essential oils for health and illness and don't

vaccinate. I haven't read this book and probably won't (I don't have time

to add another book to the list of books I want to read right now) but will

continue to be as healthy as I possibly can.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!

As a food addict. compulsive overeater, I'd much rather choose raw than junk

sad. The side effects are so much healthier. :-) I too want to become as

healthy as possible. I understand there will always be people trying to convince

me or others why what we are doing is wrong and why. All I know is this, for me,

is not a diet, it is my lifestyle of choice. The fact that someone writes a

book is not going to sway me back to my old " unhealthy " habits. I am adding new

healthy habits to my life. I am choosing to be healthy. Others are free to not

agree with my lifestyle and are free to find what works for them. I love

America.

I haven't read it but I've heard about it.

One note of caution: Dieticians are known for being very conservative.

Nutritionists are more raw-vegan friendly.

Jeannie:

what you say makes sense. Everyone makes their own choices. The

dietician told me a story about how when her sister was into raw food

she came to a family holiday meal with " her own bread, her own food " .

The dietician was appalled by this. Which kind of seems more like an

issue for the dietician, and it's not about what her sister is up to.

Julian,

" dietician was appalled by this.... " LOL this made me chuckle out loud. I

agree with your statement, it does feel like, to me as well, that this is the

dietician's issue.

I find it interesting also that since going 100% raw, I seem to have more

friends, " offering " me sad food. lol They seem hurt when I thank them and tell

them I am choosing to stay raw.

how true!

the offering of junk food ..and i do mean junk food ...is endless at

my job...bagels, krispy kremes, mcdonalds, ice cream, its

constant...its never so obvious as whenyoure not having any 8-)

i just turn it down gently and have some fruit. Every single person

around me is obese. Every one except me....but that USED to be me..i

loooove that stuff..but it just ain't worth it. They dont make the

connections though ...they complain about being fat but just keep

eating junk... Very sad actually... One gal went to hospital last week

with allergy related asthma....never had it before...scared her to

death...caused a panic attack for lack of breath....a tragedy really.

Cuz theres no good reason for it. Her 14yr old daughter, beautiful

girl, obese too..

very sad.

viva la raw food!

I love it when people say I'm " obsessed " . If they had to deal with years of

PCOS, endometrosis, infertility, very painful periods, heavy bleeding,

IBS, gluten intolerance, insulin resistance (all before the age of 25) and

so on, they wouldn't feel that way. Sure in my own way, I am obsessed with

raw food (and food in general) but its mainly because Western Medicine has

done nothing good for me other than assistance in trauma or emergency

situations. To be fair, I don't talk about my food choices much with other

people unless asked. I wont avoid social situations because of food either -

though there are certain things I just wont eat. I do know people with

" orthorexia " and no one I know who is on a raw food diet has it. The people

I know who have it are mostly on a cooked diet and count calories, and fat

grams like the world is coming to an end if they dont. Raw food has freed

me from such obsession.

I feel frustrated because my girlfriend is overweight, drinks a lot of coke and

eats a lot of

processed vegetarian food. She's always complaining about headaches, skin

rashes, lack of

energy and depression and I don't want to preach, so I just try to live my life

and gently

mention that maybe her health problems relate to her eating habits... And

diabetes is in

her family! She's coming to the conclusion herself that her diet isn't the best.

I think it's

Julian, I totally agree with you about processed foods make people not

healthy...I prepare each meal with fresh herbs and organic ingredients...my

dream is to build my organic garden (one day) when I move from NYC...all the

best to everyone in the group...have a great evening, yOkO

Perhaps you could use the opportunity provided by recent stories

in the media to start these conversations. In this way, you are

not the messenger, but rather sharing your surprise at the latest

crazy food scandal. And there's always something! Most recent

may be the benzoate in soft drinks: http://snipurl.com/1mnef

Julian,

I can understand your frustration. It sounds liek you are handling it in a

good way though because it is perfect to offer to make your fruit or salads for

two and just set an example because if you were 'preachy' then that would

probably just turn her off. Just remember in the end it has to be her choice to

make those changes.

I feel your frustration. I have a lot of that sort of thing going on in my

family too. It just kills me to see someone with high cholesterol and high

blood pressure, who has to take a bunch of meds, eating a hamburger! ugh! But

I have to remind myself that junk food is physically addicting. It's like

telling an alcoholic they should drink less. They already know it (or are in

denial) but just can't do it until they are ready, no matter how much you try to

help them. Try not to drive yourself crazy about it, keep setting the good

example without nagging, and hope for the best! It's all we can do.

Best wishes!
