SPLENDA?!?!

Why would anyone put splenda in anything?

Sucralose, the base of splenda, was originally created in the laboratory to

be an insecticide. Scientists were experimenting in making molecules

identical to common complex powerful insecticides and just tweaking an atom

here or there. Most flavor chemists (who will attest to its being tested

safe for food use and put it in food) will not use it personally because of

it sinister chemical composition. (Source: New Yorker, The Search for Sweet

by Burkhard Bilger May 22, 2006.)

www.moleculeoftheday.com/category/food/page/2/

" Sucralose was discovered in 1976 by scientists from Tate & Lyle, working

with researchers at Queen Elizabeth College (now part of King's College

London). It was discovered by Leslie Hough and a young Indian chemist

Shashikant Phadnis. The duo were trying to make an insecticide. On a

late-summer day, Phadnis was told to test the powder. Phadnis thought that

Leslie asked him to taste it; so he did. He found the compound to be

ridiculously sweet (the final formula was 600 times sweeter than sugar). "

Whenever someone asks me for Splenda, I always ask the same question, " You

do realize that it was originally created for use as insecticide? "

oh youre not gonna like this....

guilty of splenda use here too....

this story sounds amazingly similar to the story of how aspartame was

discovered...

another " accidental tasting " ..

i have to ask....

...if this guy was working on it as such a ppoowweerrful insecticide..why in

the world would

he be so quick to taste it even if his coworker DID tell him to???....why

didnt he say

" nooooo waaayyy this is a pppoowweerrffuull insecticide!! " ...didnt he think

it was dangerous...

didnt he stop to think he had to have heard it wrong......?? the first

paragraph says

the chemists would never use it themselves 'cause its sooo dangerous...then

we see

in the next paragraph a chemist HAD used it and without fear!

theres something very odd about this story...lets put on our critical

thinking caps...

if someone told me a story like this at my job (police) i would say theyre

lying and

tear it apart...it just doesnt have the ring of truth to it...

that doesnt mean that splenda is good...it might very well be

poison...probably is..

but this story reeks.... " on a late-summer day " ..gggeeezzzz....what is this,

poetry?

it reads like Flannery O'conner for heavens sake...

....maybe theyre just hiring romance novelists to write press releases

now.....

anyway....calling it an insecticide only tells me that insects have a

problem with it...

slugs die when you pour salt on them..they actually dissolve..so salt is

equivalent to

hydrochloric acid then? humans shouldnt have any? not even a little tiny

envelope

of it? and ants haaate coffee grounds....oooo now thats scary...dont even

THINK

of touching my morning coffee....

i keep my use of it to a minimum, because its man-made..that by itself makes

me

doubt its safety...but this story sounds like it was written by the people

at *Equal.*

sorry....i just haaate being snowed...it makes me kook..

This is true... WHY oh WHY would you want to use ANY ARTIFICIAL sweetener?

I will not use any of the little packets...not the blue one, the pink one or the

yellow one.

These are all terrible and loaded with chemicals and are terribly harsh on your

kidneys!

I wont use anything with ASPARTAME in it either.

Why does the FDA continue to let them put these chemicals in food...not that

anything that uses these chemicals can be considered food...but lets face it, a

majority of the people are consuming these foods and are not told about some of

these chemicals, not that I think it would stop most of them.

Its a shame they couldn't find a cheap safe sweetener to use. I used to love

chewing gum, and occasionally I would love to indulge in a piece, but I wont use

the sugary kind, and all the sugar free ones use aspartame. I did find one

brand at sunflower market that was all organic and had no artificial sweeteners

in it, but it did not chew like gum...it dissolved into this gritty gooey mess

and tasted horrid!

So I give up on the gum search! LOL..

And continue to wonder about artificial sweeteners....and how long it will take

for people to wake up!

I tell everyone how terrible all those artificial sweeteners are. I haven't

used sugar or had sugar in my house in years. I use Agave or Raw Honey and

all my recipes turn out just fine. I did find a brand of gum sweetened with

xylitol (sp?) that isn't too bad in the flavor department. I don't use it

often though.

Seriously, check the sources. This is not an urban myth.

The New Yorker Article, which has a pretty high standard of journalism,

tells a pretty interesting story. One of the chemists had a hindi accent, so

test sounded a lot like taste. Having worked in labs, this type of really

stupid accident is not unheard of. The New Yorker has one of the most

scrupulous fact checking department's in all of the written media. They are

one of the standards for getting their facts right. (honestly, I would trust

their verifying their " facts " more than I would trust anyone on this list.

No offense.)

The full article (not just the abastract) describes the complex structure of

the insecticide that they were copying and how similar splenda's structure

is. They had one flavour chemist describe in detailed chemical terms how

they are nearly identical.

And yes, the FDA approved it after reading the pharmaceutical company's

safety report on their own product.

If you want to continue eating splenda, that's your choice. Who knows, you

maybe achieving some Darwinian result for the human gene pool that benefits

us all.

Seriously though, your choices are your choices and maybe, for you, the

benefits of what splenda brings into your life outweighs the uncalculatable

risks of long-term exposure. I sincerely wish you the greatest health and

happiness in all things.

the 6th paragraph, answers the first.

here are 2 reasons i would figure that folks (including myself sometimes)

use these products (altho i only use splenda)

1- people use these products to keep calories low, thinking of saving

calories, then they get used to using them.

2- people use these products because they have issues with sugar, like

hypoglycemia (like me) or diabetes.

in my situation where i would use agave nectar for something at home, i can

not at work....i dont store agave at work....and wouldnt want to.

but theyve got lots and lots of multi-colored packets...so i grab one or

two....

i don't have it at home..dont have anything artificial at home...

i will not become so paranoid that 2 packets of splenda occassionally are

going to hurt me, while eating an otherwise exceptional diet that has

fortified my system against assaults from splenda in the first place.

i am certain that those of you that use shampoo daily dont worry about the

fact that its engine degreaser that youre using, and that your scalp pores

are the biggest on your body.

or that deodarants and antipersperants get *inside* you through your arm

pits contributing to breast cancer.

or worry that the flouride in your toothpaste, a by product of the aluminum

can making process, is going to poison you...

or have bothered to take out your mercury/silver fillings...(now THERE is

poison)...

we are bombarded daily by assaults to our bodies...not just by SAD but by

chemicals eeevveerryywwhheerrreee...and how many of you really, and truly,

have switched to 100% green products??? air, water, food, cleaning

products, beauty products, hygiene products..c'mon.

.....if i had to choose my poison..and i do get to choose...we all do....i

think 2 packets twice a week on average, is the smarter choice over 7-8 fast

food meals in a week, which incidently is what i had gotten to before i

switched to 80-90% raw.

the splenda helps boost the flavor of an otherwise unpleasant, but raw,

combination of flavors, either on bitter fruits or in a smoothie with extra

strong greens....if im ONLY taking in 4 packets a week compared to the

POUNDS of salt, grease, and god knows what in the fast food that i am

replacing with these raw foods, then i am wwwaaayyy ahead of the vvvaaasst

majority of people, " healthy " or otherwise.

you folks need some perspective. 'cause there are very, very few perfect

ones among you.

and besides...if eating raw isnt enough to fortify the body against

something so small...what are we doing it for anyway?

You go, girl!

You are an informed and mature adult, and you make your choices and run with

them. Love your process! You work hard to take of your body to deal with

questionable additives and environmental toxins. I applaud how much work you

do to love and care for your cells.

I am into spreading this information not to be harsh on you but so that

others can make their own informed decisions, as well.

I, in no way, resent your making a choice for yourself. I do resent chemical

conglomerates repackaging a poorly performing insecticide and marketing it

as a food additive (which is the case with splenda.)

All the best,

Tom

I so completely agree what you said about the poisons and toxins in our

everyday products. About a year ago I started finding and reading about all

the bad stuff in shampoo, lotions, toothpastes and so on. I just about made

myself crazy and broke trying to find alternatives for every single product.

I finally decided to make as many changes as I could and just live with the

fact that I can never have a completely poison and chemical free life. I

changed my shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, household

cleaning products and maybe one or two other things and have just decided

that it will have to be enough!!! I was literally reading every label and

freaking out LOL!!!

I have decided to make my raw living the same way. I'm not going to spend

every second of the day trying to become completely raw, but rather make

slow and gradual changes as my life style allows. I'm about 50% right now

and hope that with the growing season in full swing to get the percentage a

little higher. We'll see how it goes!!

Have a wonderful day and thanks for sharing!!

exactly...its a process...no one is going to do this perfectly.

really, how many juliano's are in this email group?

everyone here is moving forward little by little...there are going to be

trade

offs, adjustments, estimates, full-on failures, and just plain being human.

im not one to sweat the small stuff...i have made so many changes in my food

that i am wwaaayyy ahead, even including a few packets of whatever in a

week.

life was meant to be enjoyed,,and if once a month i break down and do fast

food..and i enjoy it (altho lately the disgusting feeling after can not be

called enjoyment)

then so be it...

how is torturing yourself over a few specks of dust an improvement? thats

not life...

thats already living like youre dead.

now for those of you that enjoy that kind of attention to detail, more power

to you..

i remind everyone that the longest lived people on the planet are NOT raw

foodists.

so there is no reason, for me personally, to be anal about tiny things.

I am new and havent posted yet to this group but I just wanted to

suggest, if it hasnt been already lol, that instead of splenda, there

are small packets or liquid versions of the herb stevia, which is a

natural sweetener and doesnt affect sugar levels. The taste does take

some getting used to, as anything..

I'm sorry if someone already suggested this. Thanks

I totally agree with you Anna.

LOL....I was thinking as soon as I read that line........why the heck would he

taste an INSECTICIDE???? I would have questioned " UH...dude...you want me to

TASTE?? or do you mean test? lol

I thinks these " chemists " are " sniffing or snorting " too much of their

" insecticide " . lol

Re: [Raw Food] SPLENDA?!?!

oh youre not gonna like this....

guilty of splenda use here too....

this story sounds amazingly similar to the story of how aspartame was

discovered...

another " accidental tasting " ..

i have to ask....

...if this guy was working on it as such a ppoowweerrful insecticide..why in

the world would

he be so quick to taste it even if his coworker DID tell him to???....why

didnt he say

Re: [Raw Food] SPLENDA?!?!

the 6th paragraph, answers the first.

here are 2 reasons i would figure that folks (including myself sometimes)

use these products (altho i only use splenda)

'cause there are very, very few perfect

ones among you.

and besides...if eating raw isnt enough to fortify the body against

something so small...what are we doing it for anyway?

peace

Anna,

I seem to be on the same page as you on lots of things. I totally agree. I think

that any " extreme " is not good. One can be compulsive in anything. I have

boxes of splenda in my pantry from when I used to use it all the time.

I actually " fell off the wagon " today. Not by choice but by accident. At work we

have reps bring lunch from time to time. I had ordered a greek salad, thinking

it would be safe. Ha! Just my luck. It came with grilled chicken on it. Who,

in the world puts grilled chicken on a greek salad? I never would have guessed.

Well, did I take it off? NOOOOOOOOOO....What did I do? I did contemplate not

eating it. I could not see tossing it out and my mouth began watering. I WANTED

it. I ended up, eating it, against my better judgement. I did feel guilty for a

little while. Not for long. lol I don't feel guilty now. I will just get back

on the wagon tomorrow and try to get back to eating raw again. I am not

perfect. I still love the world of sad. I have to be honest.

I am enjoying the raw lifestyle. I am enjoying the pursuit of health via the raw

lifestyle. However, if I do venture off, fall off the wagon, if you will, it

won't be the end of the world for me. I will simply get back on the wagon.

A little splenda now and then won't bother me.

Re: [Raw Food] SPLENDA?!?!

exactly...its a process...no one is going to do this perfectly.

really, how many juliano's are in this email group?

everyone here is moving forward little by little...there are going to be

trade

offs, adjustments, estimates, full-on failures, and just plain being human.

im not one to sweat the small stuff...i have made so many changes in my food

that i am wwaaayyy ahead, even including a few packets of whatever in a

week.

life was meant to be enjoyed,,and if once a month i break down and do fast

food..and i enjoy it (altho lately the disgusting feeling after can not be

called enjoyment)

then so be it...

how is torturing yourself over a few specks of dust an improvement? thats

not life...

thats already living like youre dead.

now for those of you that enjoy that kind of attention to detail, more power

to you..

i remind everyone that the longest lived people on the planet are NOT raw

foodists.

so there is no reason, for me personally, to be anal about tiny things.

im afraid jeannie that i dont understand the meaning yw....

but it should be clear to anyone that reads the thread that i was

commenting on the quoted paragraphs.

quotes mean youre taking something SOMEONE ELSE said.....i can make

fun of that all day long.

if ones ego is so tender that they take offense when someone critizes

A QUOTED AUTHOR because they chose the quote....well thats paranoid

thinking..and i have nothing to do with that.

carry your own baggage. This homey dont play dat.

Tom,

Me thinks one needs to lighten up a bit.............

Oh and I invite you to be my friend too. We can never have too many friends. I

think that is what brings us to the wonderful group. The desire to learn and

grow in the world of raw. We come here to share thoughts and ideas. And to learn

from one another. It is ok to agree AS WELL AS disagree.

I see no reason to be so thinned skinned as to be overly offended at comments

that are made. I haven't seen any " personal attacks " on anyone.

Jeannie

P. S. (my apologies to any actual thinned skinned people out there)

your time is the most cherished gift of all, tomorrow is promised to no one.

and dont stop posting, youre reacting to something completely

wrong...i didnt say anything about YOU being ridiculous....

as for the splenda though, we will use what we see fit..it is

our right,,,but that should hardly make you stop posting.
