Guest guest
I'm amazed at the rapid fire retorts in my daily digest on this site! Where do you find the time?! > your body is you. its no one else. > > your mind is in charge of your body. > > i know that people are telling you to listen to your body, but theyre > putting the cart > before the horse,,,youre not at a position yet where your body is > being > honest..its > addicted...it lies... My experience is that the body is always being honest. It's the only part of us that's always being honest. It's the mind that lies. The question is can the mind be taught to hear the truth that the body is speaking? In the beginning, can the mind just be aware of the sensations of craving without having to satisfy them? They are only sensations. By themselves they have no meaning. It's our belief (thought) that they are bad sensations that has us react in a way to try to make them go away. If we can just feel them without that need to get rid of them, they will pass. All things change... We've been trained - conditioned - that we have to DO something to make these sensations go away. When we do that, we are only guaranteeing that the craving will return. We are providing the the part of the cycle that keeps it going - over and over again. The only way I've found out of these conditioned circles is to learn to allow the feelings, allow the sensations without judging them as good or bad. Just experience them until they pass. Every time you do this, they have a little less of a grip on you. You've lessened the grip that the cycle has on you. You are a little bit freer. I know there are many ways to ameliorate the craving process. Change the stimulus, change the thoughts, say a mantra, change this and that. They work in the sense that they lessen the destructive behavior, but the behavior is still being controlled by the sensation and our reaction to it. It's like someone saying I don't have any relationship with so-and-so. We haven't spoken in 10 years. In fact, that IS your relationship. And it's your thoughts, feelings and reactions that keep the relationship frozen in that state. Same is true with cravings. It's our reaction to them that keeps them in place - keeps feeding them and keeps them strong. Someone else said recently that they can't sit still. To learn to listen to the body you have to learn to sit still and listen, learn to feel the sensations the body is having - or more accurately the sensations the body is being. These sensations are the feeling of life. This is where we are alive. All our thinking about it, wanting it to be different, is taking us away from the truth of OUR life. You can try this... Sit in a comfortable position in your favorite chair, couch, or where you are right now. Close you eyes. Take a few deep breaths and with each exhale relax a bit. Then put you attention on your head. Feel the sensations in your head. Sensations include heat, cool, itching, twitching, heaviness, lightness, pulsing, pain, pleasure... anything that is a physical sensation. After about a minute, move you attention to you neck. What sensations are there? After a minute move you attention doing the same thing to your right shoulder, then your right arm, your left shoulder, your left arm, your upper back, your lower back, upper chest, lower chest, pelvic area, right thigh, right lower leg, right foot, left thigh, left lower leg, left foot. Then go back to you head - repeating the pattern. When you notice a sensation, notice any reaction to it. Do you want it to stay? Do you want it to go? Is it neutral? There will be sensations and thoughts telling you to get up and run. That you're wasting your time. That you have other more important things to do. You'll remember why you are upset about something. What you forgot to do. What you really need to tell so-and-so to set things right. All of these thoughts and feelings to RUN, RUN, RUN are the truth of what lives in your body and mind. This is the experience of the internal pressure that is running the show - the internal programming that's making the choices in your life. The game is to experience all sensation as just that. No reaction either way. And not to shut off the sensation - cause it to disappear because it's unpleasant. Until you can be with this internal pressure without fighting with it, you choices will exist within this battlefield. Sometimes you'll win. Sometimes you'll lose. Struggle-struggle-struggle. When you can just experience these internal waves without wanting them to go away - or wanting to get away - you can freely make another choice that will be a true and complete choice - not a reaction. I can see I wrote that from a authoritative voice... It doesn't mean I'm out of the struggle. Not at all. I'm in the midst of it with all of us human doings. The authoritative voice comes from personal experience that this works. That it's transformed my life and the lives of many, many other people. It's a powerful tool to come out of the fog we live in.
