Here is the real true skinny: If you can get organic, of course, that is better. If you cannot get organic (for whatever reason: pocketbook, availability, ornery-ness), RAW IS STILL BETTER Let's say you want oranges, need oranges, dream of oranges, and where you are there are no organic oranges, but there are oranges, should you shun the oranges that you can get??? NO!!!!!!!1 Yes, there are raw-foodists who say that you must only eat organic, but hey! Some people live in the very real world and are just lucky they have a supermarket within an hour's drive! Of course, if you have a private plane that can bring in exactly what you want (as well as a private landing strip for said plane), then you should have your plane find organic food and only bring that. On the other hand, if you want to eat raw, and you cannot find organic, or cannot trust your supplier that the vegetables are organic, or simply CANNOT AFFORD organic, you can still be raw. Buy whatever you can and wash it well and eat it and stop worrying about it. (the alternative is to *cook* this non-organic food, yes? Which way will ultimately benefit you? Raw.... so you just don't cook whatever you can get) Raw is better than not raw. Organic is better than not organic. Raw organic is best, BUT..... RAW IS BETTER THAN NOT RAW!!!!!!1 there are many rules in the world. There are even more rules in the RAW FOOD world. What we need to do is DO THE BEST WE CAN. If you cannot afford organic, then eat non-organic raw. If they do not have organic where you are, then eat non-organic raw. END OF STORY. Guest guest
Margaret, LOL, If I had that plane....well, then organic would be a non-issue. LOL I agree with you 100%. I was talking with a produce guy at a store and he was telling me that it is getting harder to find seeded fruits anymore. He says that most of the grapes & watermelons are coming in seedless. He says this is because that's what the consumer is asking for " so that is what they are getting. He also said that so many of our fruits AND vegetables are " hybrid " and that MOST all fruits and vegetables have been helped along with some kind of " miracle grow " . He says it is the way of the future,to get more produce and bring in more money. I don't know what that means in the world of raw but I agree with you that we do the best we can and at least it is raw. I left a little depressed after talking to him . :-( Jeannie your time is the most cherished gift of all, tomorrow is promised to no one. Guest guest
Margatret, You are the voice of common sense and sanity. Thank you for that. I too struggle with the organic thing. The only place that has a full store full of organic stuff is about an 45 min to an hours drive away. Wild Oats Market. I love to go there, but just can't on a regular basis. After that I am left to picking thru whatever the grocery store has as organinc, and my purse to see if I can afford it. Gracious, just buying all this fruit and greens that is not organic is incredibly expensive. I can honestly eat out at restaurants every single day and not spend anymore money. It takes a lot of food to get me thru the day eating just fruits and leaves. Belinda > jeannieh h wrote: > > I just can not afford all organic. Guest guest
Belinda, WE HAD a Wild Oats in Princeton, NJ, but now they are called Olive May. They had so many floods, that they decided to sell their business. It's still basically the same health food store. It's about 25 minutes from me. I don't always get to a health food store either, so sometimes I go to Shop Rite or the Thriftway and buy organic from their organic section. So I basically do the same thing. I know what you mean about the expense of buying fruits and vegetables. Our food bill is very high, too!
