Guest guest
I have been raw for almost 3 weeks now and I'm having some problems moving my bowels. I haven't had a bm since Sunday and I'm feeling very bloated and uncomfortable. I'm not quite sure what to do. I can't remember the last time I went so long without a bm. I am also so much more gassy (sp?) than normal. Any info would be great Thanks Caroline

Guest guest
I am eating nectarines (about 3-5), apples (about 1 or 2), bananas (3-4), mangos (1 or 2), strawberries ( a pint), blueberries ( a handful), Kiwi ( 2-4) and maybe a few other fruits through out the day, a large salad once a day with romaine and butter lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, avocado and tomatoes. I think I am eating enough. I'm not hungry much ( I know not hungry, just craving). I am exercising for 40-50 minutes about 5 times a week. Other than not moving my bowels, I feel good. Today I bought some prunes and ate about 12 of them this morning. Caroline rawfood [rawfood ] On Behalf Of Elchanan Thursday, July 05, 2007 2:27 PM rawfood RE: [Raw Food] I need some help... Guest guest
Well, Caroline, this ought to break something loose for sure. LOL At least it always has for me. Guest guest
Hi Caroline, When I get bloated or gassy, it's usually due to unripe fruit or bad food combining. My husband and I both started to get that way with apples and I wasn't sure what it was, but Elchanan wrote recently that those are very difficult to find ripe. And I think they don't ripen off the tree. Depending on how you're combining some of the things you mention, that could be a problem, too. Are you familiar with food combining principles? If not, you could search the archives. If you can't find any info there, let me know and I can find some links. I just don't have them immediately handy. Guest guest
Thanks for the tip with the apples. The only thing I am really combining is the salad stuff. Otherwise I am eating the fruit by itself. Say 2 or 3 nectarines at a time then waiting to eat something else. Is that what you mean by combining? Guest guest
It depends how long you're waiting and in what order you're eating things. I can't really quote exact times for how long each thing takes to digest, and it also depends on a person's state of health as to how things are digested. But, for example, juicier fruits digest faster than those with less water content (hence, the idea to eat melons alone, and especially not soon following other foods--even fruits). And the degree of acidity is a factor--things are usually categorized into sweet (bananas), sub-acid (mangoes, apples), and acid (oranges, strawberries, tomatoes). So, if the bananas aren't fully digested when you eat strawberries (probably at least a couple hrs. between them?), that could contribute to gassiness. Again, a person's state of health will come into play. Usually, a person can " tolerate " more combinations in the beginning (not notice the effects), and will become more sensitive as they get healthier. In general, sweet fruits combine alright w/sub-acid, but not with acid, and not with fats. Sub-acid and acid usually combine well. Greens usually combine well w/anything. There are charts online, and some books on the topic. And there might be something more thorough in the archives here. Have them half to one hour before meals. neal.
